Maharashtra State Board 12th Chemistry Previous Year Question Papers Trends

Analysis of the Maharashtra State Board class 12 Chemistry previous year question papers brings out certain significant trends that can guide students in their preparation. During the last few years, the question papers have maintained a balanced mix of theoretical problems and numerical problems, pointing toward the comprehensiveness of the prescribed syllabus. Some key trends that were spotted are as follows:

Topics Treated: Trends in Maharashtra State Board Class 12 Chemistry Last 3 Years

Year 2024: The very recent paper in 2024 comprises a balanced mixture of topics; however, questions on solid state, chemical kinetics, and polymers have been predominantly featured. Some of the practical-based and experiment-based questions were on trends of modernity towards application-based learning. That is the way of times in education and one of the major moves by the Maharashtra board towards application-based learning.

Year 2023: The 2023 paper had slightly different questions but still maintained a heavy focus on Organic Chemistry and Solutions. Some specific areas that were significantly assessed include reaction mechanisms, alcohols, phenols, ethers, and types of solutions. This could be due to the emerging trend to adapt the examination content according to entrance examinations to various fields, including Medical and Pharmaceutical studies. This means an emphasis on some foundational concepts that are very fundamental in higher studies within these fields.

Year 2022: The paper in 2022 was majorly focused on Physical Chemistry, with emphasis on thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, and chemical equilibrium. Many questions were numerically based, especially those on reaction rates, activation energy, and the equilibrium constant, another hallmark of applications of chemistry as against its mere comprehending phase. This emphasis is part of a more universal trend in education toward problem-solving and analytical skills.

Maharashtra Class 12 Chemistry Question Paper with Complete Solution

Q1. Explain Wolf-Kishner reduction reaction.

Solution: The Wolf-Kishner reduction is a reaction that reduces the carbonyl group of aldehydes and ketones to a methylene group on treatment with zinc-amalgam and hydrazine followed by heating with sodium or potassium hydroxide in high boiling solvent like ethylene glycol (Wolf-Kishner reduction).

Wolf-Kishner reduction reaction

Wolf-Kishner reduction is used to synthesize straight chain alkyl substituted benzenes which is not possible by FriedelCrafts alkylation reaction.

Q2. Write postulates of Werner's theory of coordination complexes.

Solution: The postulates of Werner's theory are as follows:

  1. Unlike metal salts, the metal in a complex possesses two types of valencies: primary (ionizable) valency and secondary (nonionizable) valency.
  2. The ionizable sphere consists of entities which satisfy the primary valency of the metal. Primary valencies are generally satisfied by anions.
  3. The secondary coordination sphere consists of entities which satisfy the secondary valencies and are non-ionizable. The secondary valencies for a metal ion are fixed and satisfied by either anions or neutral ligands. The number of secondary valencies is equal to the coordination number.
  4. The secondary valencies have a fixed spatial arrangement around the metal ion.

Solution: Anomalous behaviour of oxygen:

  1. Atomicity: Oxygen is a diatomic molecule O2while others are polyatomic molecules. For example P4, S8.
  2. Magnetic property: Oxygen is paramagnetic while others are diamagnetic.
  3. Oxidation state: Oxygen shows -2,-1, and +2 oxidation states while other elements show, -2,+2,+4,+6 oxidation states. Oxygen can not exhibit a higher oxidation state due to the absence of vacant d orbitals.
