The Fit India School Week: SAI’s Fitness Programmes In Schools

FIT India School Week

In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the first Fit India School Week was observed during the third week of November 2019. The first school week had participation from over 15,000 schools.

The second iteration took place from December 2020 to January 2021, in that edition more than 4.3 lakh schools nationwide participated. This version included yoga, free hand drawing, painting, debate and discussions, and symposiums.

The third iteration was held from November 2021 to January 2022. Almost 4.5 lakh students from all over India participated in the Healthy India School Week. The celebration of Healthy India School Week included events like yoga, dance, debates, meditation, symposiums, lectures, and more.

The fourth edition of Fit India School Week was held from November 15 to January 31, 2023.

Fit India School Certification

The Fit India movement also started certifying schools with the Fit India school certification, which entitled schools to use Fit India Logo and Fit India Flag. If schools have few basic facilities or parameters set by the Fit India, then it can self certify themself by registering online at the official website.

Schools certified by Fit India can claim for three star or five star, once they satisfy the parameters set for each certification.

Parameters:

• FLAG: Schools with a playground for two or more outdoor sports, and at least one active physical education teacher can register themself for Fit India School certificate. Schools also need to have a physical education period in their curriculum and students need to spend at least 60 minutes daily on physical activity.

• 3-Star: For 3-star certification schools need at least two teachers trained with any two sports and also celebrate Fit India School Week. Sport facilities for four sports including two outdoor sports. Teachers spend 60 minutes in physical activity every day and students learn and play at least two sports.

• 5-Star: 5-star is the highest certification provided by Fit India to any school. Apart from all the parameters for 3 star certification, a school needs to fulfil a few more parameters to get their 5 star certificate. Schools need to include annual fitness assessment for students, quarterly intra-school sports competitions, participate in inter-school sports competition and celebrate annual sports day. All teaching staff should be trained in physical education and have at least two or more sports coaches. Schools should have a physical education curriculum as per NCERT, or CBSE, or SCERT. Lastly, schools should provide their playground during non-school hours for outsiders, with or without a reasonable fee.

Number of Schools With Fit India Certification: State-wise

There are many plans by the Fit India team to honour Fit India 3-Star and 5-Star Schools by organising functions at the state head-1uarters. Fit India 5 Star Schools could be felicitated at State level Republic Day and Independence Day functions too.
