After qualifying for the board exams, students opt for various entrance exams to get admitted to their dream universities and courses. There are multiple entrance exams, varying in syllabus and exam pattern, that lead to admission to different courses and universities. Students might be confused, and all of this can be too intimidating for them. Preparing for boards and for the entrance exams as well simultaneously requires hard work, dedication, and concentration to build a strong hold on subjects.

Among many such entrance exams, NEET and CUET are two that can be taken by medical students for their further studies. Both of these share some similarities; therefore, aspirants may be confused; however, they differ from one another on several points. If you are debating between the two, let’s dive into this article to understand both of them better, which will ultimately help you prepare and do well in the exams.

NEET: Understanding The Basics

The National Board of Examination (NBE) conducts the entrance exam known as the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) once a year. The exam is given to aspirants who wish to pursue medical degrees. It is conducted once a year, and the scores are valid only for a year. NEET UG enrols students in undergraduate programmes like MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery), while NEET PG will allow the aspirant to pursue postgraduate programmes like MD/MS (Doctor of Medicine/Master of Surgery) and more.

CUET: Understanding The Basics

CUET, or Central University Entrance Test, is the entrance exam given by aspirants to get admission to central universities. It is conducted by the NTA (National Testing Agency) to test the basic scientific and technological skills of the aspirants. It must be noted that this exam is mandatory to qualify if the aspirant wishes to pursue courses at central Indian universities like Delhi University (DU).

Preparation Strategies For NEET And CUET

What are the similarities?

  • Both exams have almost the same eligibility criteria, one of which is passing the Class 12 board from a recognised board. Therefore, it is necessary that the student qualify for his or her boards with good marks.
  • Preparing well for board exams can help a lot in NEET and CUET exams, as the syllabus is similar to some extent.
  • Both of these are competitive exams; therefore, the student must note that there will be thousands of other students appearing in the exam. To perform better than the others, you must consider studying smart rather than only studying hard.
  • Both of them have similar exam patterns. The paper consists of multiple-choice questions, and the aspirant gets three hours to complete the paper. So, mock tests and solving sample papers can help improve speed in both exams.
  • Both exams have technical or domain subjects; therefore, the aspirant must have a good grasp of the domain subject.
  • There is a negative marking for wrong answers in both exams; therefore, the aspirant must not guess the answer. Answer it only if you are sure about it, or leave it as an unattempted question, which wouldn’t do any harm.

What are the differences?

Specifications

NEET

CUET

Type of entrance exam

This is a centralised entrance exam.

It is more of a university-based exam.

Access to types of courses

NEET exams will only allow the aspirant to pursue medical courses either from universities or medical colleges.

CUET exams provide access to a variety of courses that can be pursued at Central Universities (CU). Various engineering, technical, or other undergraduate programmes can be pursued at CU by qualifying CUET.

Syllabus

The NEET syllabus includes all the topics of NCERT Class 11 and Class 12 so the student must consider the NCERT books mainly but can take help from online sources or other books if required.

On the other hand, the CUET exam covers the Class 12 syllabus only. However, the CUET exam also includes other sections like the English language, general knowledge, and reasoning. So, for CUET, the aspirant has to be prepared for these as well.

Exam Pattern

The NEET paper only has questions from the three main subjects, which are chemistry, physics, and biology. So, a NEET exam has 200 (180 applicable questions for attempt) objective-type questions from three subjects, while a CUET exam has 180 questions from four domains.

There are 27 domain subjects available, like biology, history, business studies, chemistry, and many more. The aspirant can choose a favourable subject from which 50 questions are asked. 40 questions are to be attempted out of 50. While in the language test (40 questions to be attempted out of 50), and general test (60 questions to be attempted out of 75).

Cut-Off

The cut-off for NEET is 50 per cent. More studying and scoring are required in the NEET if the aspirant is serious to pursue MBBS.

For the general category, you can anticipate cut-off marks of 50% based on recent trends.

NCERT Books

Relying completely on the NCERT books of Class 11 and Class 12 and attempting mock tests can help to ace the NEET exam.

As CUET has more subjects, the aspirant cannot only rely on NCERT books. Study materials, Youtube channels, or other trusted online resources have to be considered as well for the preparation of reasoning, GK, and English.

Does NEET Preparation Help In CUET Preparation And Vice-Versa?

NEET is important to gain entry into medical courses, as without qualifying for the exam, most universities deny admission. The cut-off is higher than CUET and hence will require more focus. The medical aspirant must keep equal preparation time for physics, chemistry, and biology.

Whereas CUET allows the aspirants to pursue courses in the central universities of India. Apart from the domain subject, for example, biology, there are other sections as well, like reasoning, general knowledge, and the English language. This is easier than NEET and covers only the Class 12 syllabus.

So, it can be concluded that both of them can only partially help in the preparation of each other. NEET includes the Class 11 syllabus, which is not required in CUET while the latter has other domains like reasoning.

I hope the debating thoughts regarding NEET and CUET and their preparations are clear! All the best.
