Winter is coming! Fortunately, our winters are much more fun and easy compared to the depiction of winter in Game of Thrones. In India, the temperatures lie between 25 degrees in the southern states and almost 0 degrees in the north. India’s Himalayan region is covered in a blanket of snow during the peak winters. Cold winds blow through the plains and fog lingers on the streets from dusk till dawn.
Winters usually make us lazy. Nobody likes to leave the warmth and comfort of the bed in the morning. However, winter has its own charm and basking in the warm sunlight is one of them. While grown ups have their routine to keep them on their toes, young students can take up these activities to stay energetic during winter.
When the cold slows things down, laziness and lack of inspiration try hard to get hold of us, we need to find creative ways to tackle it. Here are three important activities for school students to beat the winter blues and enjoy this beautiful season with lots of energy and enthusiasm.
Leaving the bed may seem tough, and small tasks may become difficult but the best way to remain active during winter is to exercise.
Engage in any physical activity that involves body movements. Sports are a good way to exercise. Sports like badminton, cricket, gymnastics, tennis, or swimming (there are centrally heated pools too), can be pursued. Alternative sports activities like yoga, running, karate, martial arts can also be followed routinely.
When you exercise or do any intensive physical activity, the pituitary gland releases hormones called endorphins. Endorphins induce a sense of well-being and confidence. Exercising daily helps you sleep better and keeps you active throughout the day.

In the cold weather the body demands food to keep itself warm. The season makes it easy to deviate from a healthy diet to easily available comfort food and snacks. Snacks and junk food are a pleasure to the taste buds but take a toll on our bodies. The excess sodium, carbs and sugar present in fast foods can lead to digestive disorders and dental problems. It can also lead to gaining unhealthy calories.
Fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes can fulfil all your nutrient and energy requirements. Food items rich in vitamin C can boost your immune system. Drink enough water and juices to keep hydrated. Replace the snacks and fast food with healthier options such as soup, muesli, oats and the right proportions of nuts such as almonds, cashew, pistachios, and raisins. Dried apricots, dried figs, dates and prunes are healthy options to satiate your hunger pangs between meals.
Eating right will ensure you stay active throughout your day, manage tasks at hand with ease and live healthily.
Much of our strengths are the direct results of what we do with our free time. Hobbies are one of the great ways to spend free time. Come winter, when the pace of our routines gets a little slow. Try and use this time to develop a hobby. If you already have one, that is good. If you don’t, try picking up an instrument of your choice or try your hands at reading, painting, chess, sculpting or anything else that you feel like. There are so many hobbies to choose from, pick one that interests you.
Hobbies will help you stay active and boost your confidence. It also gives a sense of accomplishment when you’re productive in your free time.
