Scholarships have become the only means for students from underprivileged and marginalised communities to continue their education especially, for students.

Along with central government schemes, all state governments have initiated multiple schemes to fund the students' education from Class 1 to postgraduate studies. The more generous grants cover books, even study tour allowances. Some of the schemes have specific target groups – students studying medicine or girls – while most on the list below are for students belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Communities.

Listed below with eligibility criteria and application process are the scholarship opportunities offered by Delhi and Maharashtra governments. Each provides more than a dozen scholarships.

Scholarships, Financial-Aid: Delhi

Delhi Government offers scholarships and financial assistance to students from backward communities and economically weaker sections residing in the state. Application to most of these is through Delhi Government’s scholarship e-portal – edistrict.delhigovt.nic.in

Delhi Ladli Yojana

The Delhi Ladli Scheme was launched in 2008 for girl children born in Delhi. The state scholarship aims to empower girls in the state, control female foeticide and reduce school drop-out rate of girl students in Delhi. It covers girl children from birth to the first two years of post matric studies, that is, up to Class 12.

Eligibility:

  • Girl should be born in Delhi and possess birth certificate issued by the registrar (births and deaths), MCD or NDMC

  • Girl’s family must be resident of the National Capital Territory of Delhi for at least three years before the birth girl child

  • Annual family income should be below Rs 1 lakh

  • If the girl is going to school, her school must be recognised by Delhi Government, MCD or NDMC.

  • Benefit of the scheme limited to two surviving girls per family.

How To Apply: Applicant should fill the registration form available at the district office and submit her birth certificate. The applicant can also register herself at schools by filling the registration form available with the Ladli in-charge which further gets approved by the principal of the school and sent to the respective district office.

Financial Assistance to Educationally Backward Minority Students

This applies to students from minority communities in the state.

Eligibility:

  • For Muslim and Neo-Buddhists students

  • Annual family income should be equal to or below Rs 1 lakh

  • Student must be in any class from Class 1 to Class12

What It Covers:

  • Primary students (Classes 1-5) will get Rs 300 per annum

  • Middle school students (Classes 6-8) will get Rs 400 per annum

  • Secondary school students (Classes 9, 10) will get Rs 500 per annum

  • Senior secondary students (Classes 11 and 12) will get Rs 600 per annum

How To Apply: Eligible students can apply through their schools or send a request to the Department of Welfare of SC or ST or OBC or Minorities, Government of Delhi.

Pre-Matric Scholarship Scheme For OBC Students

This scholarship covers children from the Other Backward Classes till matriculation or, Class 10.

Eligibility:

  • Must belong to OBC category

  • Must be in any class from Class 1 to Class 10

  • Applicants must be domiciled in Delhi

  • Annual family income should not exceed Rs 2.5 lakh

What It Covers:

  • Students of Classes 3-10 living in hostels will get Rs 500 per month for 10 months

  • Day scholars in Classes 1 to 10 will get Rs 100 per month for 10 months

  • An ad-hoc grant of Rs 500 per annum

Pre-Matric Scholarship Scheme For SC Students

This covers Dalit children in school up to Class 10.

Eligibility:

  • Must belong to the SC category

  • Annual family income should not exceed Rs 2.5 lakh

  • Must be in Class 9 or Class 10 in a recognised school

  • Domiciled in Delhi

What It Covers: Rs 750 per month along with books and an ad-hoc grant of up to Rs 1,000 per annum.

PMS Scholarship For OBC Students

This post-matric OBC scholarship is for schooling and education beyond Class 10.

Eligibility:

  • Must belong to OBC category

  • Student must be in any level from Class 11 to postgraduate studies in India

  • Must be domiciled in Delhi

  • Annual family income should not exceed Rs 1 lakh

What It Covers: Maintenance allowance up to Rs 10,000 per annum and course fee up to Rs 20,000 per annum

PMS Scholarship For SC Students

The Post Matric Scholarship for Dalit students covers senior secondary and higher education.

Eligibility:

  • Must belong to the SC category

  • Annual family income must not exceed Rs 2.5 lakh

  • Must be pursuing post-matriculation or post-secondary level studies within India

  • Must be domiciled in Delhi.

  • Students who have completed a level of education but are studying at the same level with a different subject are not eligible

What It Covers:

  • Maintenance allowance of up to Rs 1,200 per month

  • Tuition fees, study tour allowances, book allowance and more

Merit Scholarship For Professional, Technical Courses

This scholarship is for students from SC, ST, OBC and minority communities pursuing professional or technical degrees.

Eligibility:

  • Must be domiciled in Delhi

  • Annual family income less than Rs 2 lakh per annum

  • Must not be receiving any other central or state scholarship

  • Must be studying in a recognised college, university, professional or technical institute

Uniform Subsidy To School Students

Eligibility:

  • Must be in any class from Nursery to Class 12 in government or government-aided school

  • Private school students in freeship quota

What It Covers:

  • Nursery to Class 5: Rs 1,100 per annum

  • Class 6 to Class 8: Rs 1,400 per annum

  • Class 9 to Class 12: Rs 1,500 per annum

How To Apply: Application is through schools or by contacting the Department of SC, ST, OBC or Minority Welfare.

Reimbursement Of Tuition Fee

This, too, is for SC, ST, OBC and minority students.

Eligibility:

  • Annual family income must not exceed Rs 2 lakh

  • Must belong to SC, ST, OBC or Minority category

  • Domiciled in Delhi.

  • In case of minorities, student must be a resident of Delhi for the past three years

  • Must be studying in any class from Classes 1 to 12 in a recognised school

What It Covers:

  • Classes 1-5: Reimbursement of tuition and other compulsory fees

  • Classes 6-12: Reimbursement of tuition and other compulsory fees. But students should have scored at least 50% and had attendance of at least 80% in preceding year

  • Annual family income under Rs 60,000: 100% reimbursement of fees

  • Annual family income under Rs 2 lakh: 75% reimbursement

Scholarships, Financial-Aid: Maharashtra

The Maharashtra Government too offers state scholarships to marginalised students. All application processes require a wide variety of documentary proof of caste, domicile, income proof and more.

Ekalavya Scholarship

This scheme is offered by the Maharashtra’s directorate of higher education to provide financial aid to meritorious students belonging to underprivileged backgrounds.

Eligibility:

  • Permanent resident of Maharashtra

  • Annual income of the applicant should not exceed Rs 75,000

  • The applicant should not be working anywhere

  • Must have graduated with 60% marks in Arts, Law, Commerce or allied subjects or with 70 % marks in Science subjects from a recognised institution in Maharashtra.

What It Covers: Rs 5,000 to each student

Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Hostel Maintenance Allowance Scheme

This scheme was initiated by the directorate of medical education research, Maharashtra.

Eligibility:

  • Be a domicile of Maharashtra

  • Annual family income below Rs 8 lakh

  • Admission in MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BPTH, BOTH, BSc Nursing, BUMS, BP and O, BASLP, courses in government-aided or private, unaided institutions

  • Admission under General category and SEBC category

What It Covers: Rs 30,000 per year.

PMS Scholarship for SC students

This post-matric scholarship scheme is led by the department of social justice and special assistance, Maharashtra. The scheme aims to provide scholarships to the students of economically backward classes in order to continue their education.

Eligibility:

  • Domiciled in Maharashtra

  • Annual family income below Rs 2.5 lakh

  • Should belong to SC or Neo-Buddhist community

  • Should have passed SSC (Class 10)

  • Currently pursuing any post-matric course

What It Covers: The benefits are categorized under maintenance allowance as per group for every year (first 10 months).

In addition, SC students with disabilities will receive Rs 150 per month. All compulsory payable fees such as tuition fee, exam fee and other fees, will be covered under this scheme.

Rajarshri Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Fee reimbursement Scholarship

This scheme is an initiative of Maharashtra’s directorate of medical education research for undergraduate medical degree applicants.

Eligibility:

  • Should belong to general and SEBC category

  • Annual family income below Rs 8 lakh

  • Should have taken admission in MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BPTH, BOTH, B.Sc Nursing, BUMS, BP and O, BASLP, courses in government aided or private unaided institutions

What It Covers: 50% fee reimbursement which includes tuition fee and other fees.

Minority: Higher Professional Education Scholarship

The State Minority Scholarship For Pursuing Higher Professional Education Scholarship covers undergraduate and postgraduate professional courses.

Eligibility:

  • Permanent resident of Maharashtra

  • Annual family income under Rs 8 lakh

  • Applicant should not be recipient of any other scholarship

  • Should have been admitted through centralised admission process

  • Must have passed Class 10

  • Student of institute and admitted for professional or technical course (diploma, UG or PG degree)

What It Covers: Rs 25,000 per annum

Medley Pharma Scholarship

Medley Pharma offers financial aid to students who cannot afford to continue education due to financial barriers. The aid is provided to needy students irrespective their gender, race, religion and many more. This is a private scholarship.

Eligibility:

  • Domiciled and studying in Maharashtra

  • Annual family income under Rs 2 lakh

  • Should have passed Class 10 and currently enrolled for any course – graduation, diploma course, post graduation, ITI, management course or other

  • Should have scored 60% of marks in previous exam

  • Only one student per family allowed

What It Covers: Rs 10,000 per selected student plus interest-free loan of Rs 10,000 which has to be repaid within five years of completion of course. Loan repayment can be started from 6 months after completing the course.

How To Apply: Interested and eligible students can apply through the official website – medleylab.com – and have a guarantor with income higher than Rs 2 lakh per year.

Assistance to Meritorious Students - Senior Level, Maharashtra

This scholarship is provided by the directorate of higher education, Maharashtra.

Eligibility:

  • Passed Class 12 with 75% marks

  • Scored high in secondary (Class 10) and higher secondary (Class 12) examination

What It Covers: Candidates will receive an amount in between Rs 2,800 to Rs 72,000.
