The government of India, the state governments and other organizations provide a variety of scholarships to meritorious students. The scholarship is an award or financial assistance for students to continue higher studies. There are two ways in which a student can apply for a scholarship. The first one is through the entrance test for the respective programme and the other one is on the basis of marks obtained in the previous final examination. Let’s discuss the scholarships on the basis of merit first.

Merit Based Scholarships For Class 10 Students

Pre Matric Scholarships Scheme for Minorities:

The scholarship at pre-matric level is an initiative by the central government to encourage parents from minority communities like Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jain and Parsis, or Zoroastrians to send their children to school, lighten their financial burden on school education and sustain their efforts to support their children to complete their studies.

Students who received at least 50% in their last final examination and annual income from all sources of their parents/guardian is less than Rs 1 lakh are eligible for this scholarship.

Financial assistance would be provided in the form of a Rs 500 as admission fee, Rs 350 as monthly tuition fee and Rs 600 as monthly maintenance allowance for hostellers (Rs 100 in case of day scholars) under this scheme.

Begum Hazrat Mahal National Scholarship

The “Begum Hazrat Mahal National Scholarship” is for meritorious girl students belonging to the minority communities – Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Parsis The primary goal of this scholarship is to recognise, promote, and assist female students from national minorities who are unable to continue their education due to a lack of financial support.

All the girl students belonging to the minority communities who received at least 50% marks in their previous final examination and annual income of their parents/guardian is less than Rs 2 lakh are eligible for the scholarship. The scheme offers scholarships of Rs 5000 to selected students.

Pre-matric Scholarship for Students with Disabilities

The central government established the scholarship to encourage students with disabilities to further their education and prepare themselves to earn a dignified living as they face a number of physical, financial and psychological barriers while pursuing their studies.

Students with a disability of 40% or higher and a verified disability certificate are eligible for the scholarship. Also, students should be enrolled full-time in a school recognized by the government or by the Central/State Board of Secondary Education.

The scheme will provide financial support to selected students in the form of a Rs 1000 book grant and a Rs 600 monthly maintenance allowance for hostellers (Rs 100 for day scholars). Apart from these, a disability allowance will also be provided under this scheme as well.

CBSE Merit Scholarship Scheme For Single Girl Child

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has launched a merit scholarship scheme for single girl children, who are the only child of their parents. The scheme's purpose is to recognise parents' efforts in encouraging their daughters to attend school and to promote deserving children.

The scholarship is open to students who received 60% or higher marks in CBSE Class 10 examination and are continuing their education of Class 11 and Class 12 in CBSE-affiliated schools with a tuition fee not more than Rs 1,500 per month throughout the academic year. NRI applicants whose tuition fee is less than Rs 6,000/- per month are also eligible for the scholarship.

In this Scheme, a monthly stipend of Rs 500 would be awarded for a maximum period of two year.

Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) Scholarship

Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) Girl Child Scholarship Scheme (GCSS) 2021-22 is an initiative for the girl students of Class 10. This scholarship offers financial assistance to girls from the economically weaker section so that they can continue their education. Up to 300 deserving girls would receive an education scholarship of Rs 5000 each. Girls will be selected from recommendations received from schools in India.

National Talent Search Examination (NTSE)

NTSE is a national-level offline scholarship exam organized by the Government of India for Class 10. It has a two-stage selection process. The first stage is conducted by the individual State/UT and the second one by the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT). There is no fee to appear in the national level examination

The selected candidates will receive Rs 1250 per month for Class 11 and 12 and Rs 2,000 per month for undergraduate studies and above.

All India Scholarship Test Exam (AISTE)

All India Scholarship Test Exam (AISTE) is a merit-based education and scholarship examination programme with the purpose of offering financial assistance to students for their education and welfare. The exam fee is Rs 249, and it is usually held in the month of March.

The amount of a scholarship varies between Rs 10,000 and Rs 90,000, and the top prize winner will receive Rs 90,000, books for a year, and a certificate of excellence.

CSIR Innovation Award for School Children

Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is India’s premier Industrial Research and Development Organization and conducts the Innovation Award for School Children every year. The CSIR Innovation Award for School Children (CIASC) is an annual national competition for school children that encourages creativity and innovative thinking. For the competition, CSIR invites students to submit their original ideas for technological and design innovations. Any Indian student in Class 1 to Class 12 with a minimum age of 18 is eligible to apply through the school's principal or head of school.

There are 15 prizes in all. Besides a certificate, the cash awards range from Rs 10,000 to Rs 1,00,000. The first rank holder will get Rs 1,00,000.

Vidyarthi Vigyan Manthan

Vidyarthi Vigyan Manthan (VVM) is an initiative of Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA), in collaboration with

Vigyan Prasar an autonomous organization under the Department of Science and Technology,

Government of India and National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). VVM is a nationwide initiative that aims to popularize science among students in Class 10. The contest was designed to find bright minds with scientific aptitude from the student community.

Students of State Board, ICSE Board and CBSE Board are eligible to take part in the exam.

Fee for appearing in this exam is Rs 100 and generally, the exam is conducted in the months of November and December. National level winners will receive a participation certificate, national camp memento, and cash prizes up to Rs 25,000.

Bhaskara Scholarship: In addition to the above, Vidyarthi Vigyan Manthan introduced Bhaskara Scholarships of Rs. 2000/- per month for one year to national winners (Himalayans).

Indian School Talent Search Exam

The Indian School Talent Hunt Exam (ISTSE) is an international talent search examination for Indian schools. ISTSE is designed to assess the overall intelligence of the students. It is a single paper examination and all the students of Class 10 can take part. Students have the choice of taking the examination online or offline. Selected students will get scholarships of Rs 500 to Rs 1500 per month for 12 months.

National Scholarship Examination

National Scholarship Examination (NSE) is conducted by the National Institute of Certified Education (NICE) Foundation every year at the national level all over India. NICE Foundation is the educational trust founded by intellectual and industry experts with a vision to provide excellent learning environments for the next generation.

The trust focuses on creating a learning framework for scholarships and competitive examinations like GRE, GMAT, MPSE, UPSC, NEET, IIT-JEE Banking, etc. by providing training on the NICE Foundation platform.

It is a single paper online examination, open to all the students of Class 10. Fee for appearing in this exam is Rs 450 and it is usually held in December. Students in the top five positions will earn cash prizes ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 14,000, as well as participation certificates.
