Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, also known as S. Rajan, was the second longest serving Indian prime minister. He was also the only Indian prime minister to have been awarded a two-star rank in the British army. Throughout his accomplished career, Dr. Radhakrishnan made significant contributions to philosophy, education, and politics. Some consider him to be one of the greatest philosophers of all time and one of the most outstanding public figures of India. Born to the Telugu-speaking family of the Niyogi Brahmins, Sarvapalli-Radhakrishnan was born on September 5’ 1888. Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan is considered to be one of the greatest philosophers of Indian history.
While he was in Madras Presidency College, he studied Hindu philosophical canons, which are the Upanishads, the Bhagvad Gita, Brahmasutra, and the commentaries on Sankara, Ramunuja, and Madhava. Radhakrishnan is one of the finest and most influential scholars of comparative religion and philosophy in twentieth-century India.
Dr. Radhakrishnan's original interpretation of the Upanishads is considered an important turning point in Indian spirituality. He believed that self realisation is possible in both Hinduism and Buddhism. He also asserted that all religions are similar in their self- realisation objectives. In addition, he believed that all schools of thought are based on devotion and can lead to self-realisation. Dr. Radhakrishnan was not afraid to reinterpret ancient texts to suit modern thought and culture. His interpretations have had a significant impact on future generations of philosophers and spiritual leaders.
Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s legacy in India has been profound and enduring. He was an ardent advocate of communal harmony, and his works sought to promote understanding between the diverse cultures and faiths of India. He spoke up against religious intolerance and discrimination, and pushed for policies that would promote secularism and equal rights for all citizens of India.
Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was also a major advocate for educational reform, believing that education was the key to lasting peace and success in India. He served as the Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University from 1939 to 1948, during which time he implemented a number of reforms to improve the quality of education at the university.
Radhakrishnan was a bright student, and he won a scholarship to study at the prestigious Madras Christian College where he earned his bachelor's degree in philosophy. He continued his education at the University of Cambridge, where he earned a master's degree and a doctorate in philosophy. Radhakrishnan then returned to India, where he began a distinguished career in academia. His academic achievements led to your appointment as a professor at Calcutta University.
Dr. Radhakrishnan's social and political engagements helped further India's independence from British rule. In 1952, he became the first Indian citizen to receive a two-star rank in the British army. Later that same year, he became the first Indian cabinet member to visit China under a banner of friendship and mutual respect. During this visit, both governments signed an agreement allowing Chinese citizens to live and work in India. Both countries also agreed to dispatch military personnel for training courses at their respective academies. This friendship has continued through today; China still has an embassy in India dedicated to promoting bilateral relations between the two countries.
In addition, Dr. Radhakrishnan's contributions to education were significant- he was a Nobel laureate in Literature, a former president of India's University of Delhi, and the only Indian prime minister to have received a doctorate in philosophy from university level exams.
As a teacher, he emphasised synthesis over analysis when teaching literature courses at Delhi university and wrote several pedagogical essays on this topic as well. In addition, his poetic works feature strong philosophical undertones that have greatly influenced later authors in both poetry and drama genres.
The most prestigious academic post of Indians, the George V Chair of Philosophy at the Calcutta University, was awarded to him in February 1921.
In 1962, he became the second President of India, where he continued his passion for education. During this period, he set up several educational institutes like the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and further encouraged investment in education by making it free for the underprivileged. He is credited with helping set up institutions such as Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and establishing a National Curriculum Framework to ensure that all students have access to quality education.
In recognition for his contributions to Indian society, the Government of India declared September 5th as ‘Teacher’s Day’ in his honour - a fitting tribute to one of India’s most revered scholars. Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s life and legacy are celebrated every year on this day - with teachers all over the country being honoured for their dedication, service and commitment to education.
