He was also a professor, scholar and one of the most prominent freedom fighters. As a freedom fighter, Dr. Rajendra Prasad was jailed multiple times and went through many hardships to secure India’s independence.
Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the first President of the Republic of India from 1950 to 1962. This 12-year tenure made him the longest-serving President of the country to date. He played a key role in drafting the Constitution of India. He was also instrumental in getting the Constitution ratified by all the states.
During his tenure as President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad worked tirelessly to unify the country and promote economic development. He also helped establish close relations with other countries, particularly those in Asia and Africa. Dr. Rajendra Prasad served two terms as President before retiring from politics in 1962. Dr Rajendra Prasad was born on December 3, 1884 in the village of Zeradai, in the Champaran district of Bihar. His father Mahadev Sahay was a small landowner and his mother Kamleshwari Devi was a homemaker. He was the youngest of three brothers and a sister.
Rajendra Prasad's childhood was spent in rural Bihar, where he received his early education at a local school. He later attended the prestigious Presidency College in Kolkata, where he studied economics and law. After graduating, he began working as a lawyer in Muzaffarpur, Bihar.
After completing his education at the University of Calcutta and the University of Allahabad, he began his legal practice in 1908. In 1917, he joined the Indian National Congress and became active in the independence movement. He was arrested and jailed several times during the struggle for independence.
In India's struggle for freedom, Rajendra Prasad played a very important role. It is here that he met Mahatma Gandhi at Lucknow Pact and joined him in India's struggle for freedo. He left his job as a lawyer and went to join Gandhi with the rest of the freedom fighters to fight against British colonialism.
Rajendra Prasad's involvement in the Indian independence movement began with his participation in the Non-Cooperation Movement of 1920-22. He was soon arrested and jailed for his part in the protests. Upon his release, he became actively involved in Gandhi's Salt March of 1930 and the Quit India Movement of 1942. For his role in the political turmoil, Dr. Rajendra Prasad was imprisoned for three years and was released in 1945.
As India moved towards independence, Rajendra Prasad emerged as one of its most prominent leaders. He served as the President of the Constituent Assembly that drafted India's constitution, and later went on to become the country's first President after it.
