The Onam celebration has long been a staple of South Indian culture. This ten-day event is largely observed by people from Kerala. It is observed between August and September. The King Mahabali legend serves as the focal point of the event. The king was a legendary figure who ruled Kerala, and his subjects approved of his authority. In his kingdom, there was no prejudice, and he was well-respected. The gods, however, were enraged by his popularity and chose to send Lord Vishnu to Earth to solve the issue. Mahabali was approached by Lord Vishnu, who was disguised as a brahmin and requested three feet of land. Being the kind of king he is, Mahabali approved his request. Then, Lord Vishnu expanded to such enormous proportions that he placed one foot on the ground, encompassing the entire world, and the other on the skies. Mahabali then offered him his head when he inquired about the placement of his third step. Mahabali was then crushed to hell by Lord Vishnu. Mahabali asked to be permitted to see his people once a year. Onam is the occasion when people commemorate the legend of Mahabali's yearly visit to his people.
The Sadya, or lunch on Thiru Onam, is the most fascinating aspect of the Onam holiday celebration. On a plantain leaf, about 26 different foods are made and presented. Attending Onam Sadya gives us the chance to taste the state's cuisine and learn about its traditions. Onam feasts are given in numerous hotels both inside and outside of Kerala. Onam only occurs once a year, yet the Malayalees' passion for it lasts till the following festival.
For ten days, people in Kerala celebrate this event. This festival's days have a unique meaning. People, therefore, honour them all in different ways. People cook a vast range of foods and serve them on banana leaves.
The festivities showcase Kerala's rich culture and history. In other words, this celebration is essentially a 10-day carnival in the state. To welcome King Mahabali, people create floral displays in front of their homes.
The Onam dance is very well-liked across the nation. Kathakali, Pulikali/Kaduvakali, Kummatti Kali, Kaikotti Kali, and other traditional performances are only a few examples. Similarly to that, the festival's annual snake boat race is a top draw. It is known as Vallamkali.
Each boat has 100 rowers, each of whom is a man. The River Pampa is the site of the race. The Uthrattathi Boat Race and the Nehru Trophy Boat Race are two other well-known competitions.
The Onam Sadhya is yet another significant feature of this event. It's a feast with a variety of vegetarian cuisine. It is served on the festival's final day and is exceedingly opulent.
Onam is a celebration that unites all Keralans. It is a celebration that eliminates all the limitations we have put in place. Every year, people celebrate it with enthusiasm and delight. The celebration serves as Kerala's national holiday. It's a harvest celebration. In a country like India, where the economy is mostly agrarian and dependent on the harvest, the people celebrate every holiday that is associated with the harvest.
