In words, the number 17 equals seventeen. Let us say that we bought chocolate and it cost us 17 rupees. Then we would say that the chocolate we bought is worth seventeen rupees. 17 is also known as the cardinal number of the chocolate as it denotes the quantity.
Now, to write any number in words, one of the important factors is place value. Place values decide the value of the number by the position of each digit. Let us see how we can determine the value and wording of a number using place values.
We do this by starting with the number in the lowest position and working our way up. So the order will be ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on. Now let us look at the case of 17 (also known as seventeen). Since seventeen is a two-digit number and we start from the lowest, we will get ones and tens.

That is, seventeen is equal to
seven times one plus one times ten

Let us assume that a person is going to buy some fruits. He bought 8 oranges and 9 apples. So altogether, he bought 17 fruits. In words, we can say that he bought seventeen fruits.
Imagine a boy named Joseph is asking us the time. We look at our watch and notice that it is currently 8:17 AM. So what would we say to Joseph? We would say that the time is eight seventeen.
Assume we have a sister whose age is 17 years, and she is filling out a form. The form requires us to write our age in both numerals and words. So how would she write it? She would write it as 17 in numerals, and 17 in words would be seventeen.
Imagine it's our sister's seventeenth birthday. Which two numbers of candles would we place on the cake? one and seven, right? One and seven put together would be 17.
