Depending on the position of the digits in a number, we can represent the place value of those digits. Using the position of 1 as a reference, the first three place values can be distinguished from one another as follows:
1 stands for ones place,
10 stands for tens place, and
100 stands for hundreds place
The words one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and eight are used to represent the place value of a number from 1 to 9.
10 is the smallest number that is in the tens place and is written in words as ten.
Eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, and nineteen are the words used to write the numbers from 11 to 19. Twenty (20) is the next number.
Following the pattern, the numbers after twenty are written in words as thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety, and so on.
The preceding numbers, which range from one to nine, are mentioned along with these words for another digit. For example, Sixty-four (64), Seventy-eight (74), etc.
Using their expanded form, we can write the names of other 2 or 3-digit numbers. We consider the ones and tens place as a single unit for numbers having (11–19) as their last two digits.
For example, we can write 118 in words as “One Hundred Eighteen”.
