Any number with four digits is called a thousand. Therefore, the number 1050 is called one thousand and fifty. Unlike the difference of lakhs and millions across the world, a thousand is still called a thousand. Hence, we have the same words form “1050” in Indian as well as International number system.
Place value is the position assigned to a digit in a number. It is a system which helps us write a number into words.
For instance, the number 1050 has 1 in the thousands place, 0 in the hundreds place, 5 in the tens place, and 0 in the ones place.
Thousands | Hundreds | Tens | Ones |
1 | 0 | 5 | 0 |
According to the International system of numbering, we place commas between thousands and hundreds. But the same rule is not applied while writing the number in words.
Therefore, 1050 is also written as 1,050. But, while writing in words, no comma is used.
Using our knowledge of the place value, one can easily write any number in words.
Number at the thousands place= 1
Number at the hundreds place= 0
Number at the tens place= 5
Number at ones place= 0
Thus, by following the digit with the position they are placed in the word, naming is done. There is a thing to note: although 0s have a position in any given number, they are not mentioned in the word forms of the number.
For example, 1050 will become One thousand and fifty, and not one thousand zero hundred and fifty. Also, tens and ones are always written as double-digit numbers rather than being addressed individually.
