Multiplication is a mathematical operation that represents the fundamental concept of adding the same number multiple times. The multiplied numbers are known as the factors, and the result of the multiplication of two or more numbers is known as the product of those numbers. Multiplication is used to make repeated addition of the same number easier.
Find the total number of cupcakes if there are 6 boxes of cupcakes, each with 9 cupcakes.
We can solve this question by adding these, but it will take longer to get the answer. That is, 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 54 cupcakes. In other words, when we have larger numbers to work with, multiplication comes in handy.
Let us now solve this problem using multiplication. The number of boxes will be multiplied by the number of cupcakes in each box. When we multiply 6 and 9 we get the total number of cupcakes, we get \begin{equation}
6 \times 9=54
\end{equation}
cupcakes. As a result, we can see that we get the same result in less time. This is why multiplication is also known as repeated addition.
The order of the numbers does not matter in multiplication. So go with the order that feels more natural to you. When using multiplication tables, students may remember \begin{equation}
4 \times 9
\end{equation}
more easily than \begin{equation}
9 \times 4
\end{equation}
When multiplying three numbers, choose the two that can be easily multiplied. For example, multiplying 5 ×17 × 2 will be difficult if we first try to multiply
\begin{equation}
5 \times 17
\end{equation}
Instead, multiplying 5 and 2 yields 10, which is easily multiplied by 17 to yield 170.
When multiplying a two-digit number by a one-digit number, dividing the two-digit number by the place values can be useful. Then multiply and add each part.
For example, \begin{equation}
37 \times 4
\end{equation}
can be mentally solved by splitting 37 as 30 + 7. So \begin{equation}
30 \times 4=120
\end{equation}
And \begin{equation}
7 \times 4=28
\end{equation}
As a result, the final answer is 120 + 28 = 148. While it may appear more difficult to solve when written down, it is much easier to solve mentally.
Even if we don't remember the multiplication fact, we can easily figure it out mentally. For example, the number 17× 9 is difficult to remember. However, this can be mentally restructured as \begin{equation}
17 \times(10-1)
\end{equation}
As a result, the answer is 170 - 17 = 153.
Every multiple of 81 has the same unit digit as the multiplicand itself. The unit digit of the 5th multiple of 81, for example, is 5, and the unit digit of the 7th multiple of 81 is 7.
Using the process of repetitive addition, we can write the multiplication table of 81.
81×1 = 81 |
81×2 = 162 |
81×3 = 243 |
81×4 = 324 |
81×5 = 405 |
81×6 = 486 |
81×7 = 567 |
81×8 = 648 |
81×9 = 729 |
81×10 = 810 |
Using repeated addition |
81 |
81+81=165 |
81+81+81=243 |
81+81+81+81=324 |
81+81+81+81+81= 405 |
81+81+81+81+81+81= 486 |
81+81+81+81+81+81+81=567 |
81+81+81+81+81+81+81+81=648 |
81+81+81+81+81+81+81+81+81=729 |
81+81+81+81+81+81+81+81+81+81=810 |
