Introduction

There are six different types of triangles. Triangles are divided into types based on sides and angles. Before moving to an actual topic let's know about a triangle. Furthermore, we will be discussing in detail the types of triangles in this article.

What is a triangle

A triangle is a type of polygon having three sides, three angles, and three vertices. When all the interior angles of any triangle are added then we get 180° as a final value.

Types of triangle

As we have discussed earlier, triangles are divided into different types based on side and the basis of angles. The below-given table provides information about the types of triangles.

Based on their Sides

Based on their Angles

Scalene Triangle

Acute Triangle

Isosceles Triangle

Obtuse Triangle

Equilateral Triangle

Right Triangle

We will be learning about all the types of triangles mentioned above in detail. Along with this, we will also study the properties of each triangle in detail.

Types of Triangles Based on Sides

There are three types of the triangle which are divided based on sides and they are as follows;

  • Scalene Triangle

  • Isosceles Triangle

  • Equilateral Triangle

Now, let's discuss each of them in brief.

Scalene Triangle

All the lengths of sides are unequal in a scalene Triangle i.e. not a single side will be equal to another side in a scalene Triangle. Similarly, all the interior angles will be different in the scalene Triangle.

Isosceles Triangle

In the isosceles Triangle, two sides are equal. Also, the angles which are opposite to those equal sides are equal. In simple words, from three sides two sides are equal in length in an Isosceles Triangle and two angles are also equal in an Isosceles Triangle.

Equilateral Triangle

The equilateral Triangle is also known as an equiangular triangle as all the interior angles of an equilateral triangle are equal and they are 60° each. Also, all the sides of the equilateral triangle are equal in length.

Types of Triangles Based on Angles

There are three types of the triangle which are divided based on angles and they are as follows;

  • Acute-angled

  • Obtuse-angled

  • Right-angled

Now, let's discuss each of them in brief.

Acute Triangle

We can only call a triangle an acute angle triangle when all the angles of a triangle are acute. In simple words when all the angles of a triangle are less than 90° then the triangle is considered an acute angle triangle.

Obtuse Triangle

When any one of the angles is obtuse-angled in a triangle then the triangle is known as the obtuse Triangle. For easy understanding, when any one of the interior angles of a triangle is greater than 90° then the triangle is considered an obtuse-angled triangle.

Right Triangle

When one of the interior angles of a triangle is 90° then the triangle is considered a right-angled triangle. Also, the side opposite to this angle 90° is considered the longest side of a right-angled triangle, and it's often called the hypotenuse.

Conclusion

At last, we finally understood that six types of triangles are divided according to sides and angles. The Acute-angled, Obtuse-angled, and Right-angled triangles are types of a triangle divided based on angles whereas the Scalene Triangle, Isosceles Triangle, and Equilateral Triangle are types of a triangle divided based on sides.
