Introduction

There are a total of six types of quadrilaterals but do we know what exactly a quadrilateral is? Before discussing the main topic in this article let's understand the basic part so that we can easily grasp the main topic. In this article, we will be discussing types of quadrilaterals in detail.

What's a quadrilateral

We have mentioned the following points which are mandatory for a quadrilateral and they are as follows;

  • A quadrilateral is a polygon having four sides, four angles, and four vertices.

  • When we sum all the interior angles of a quadrilateral then we get 360° as our final answer.

Mostly all the sides and angles of quadrilaterals are different but some of the quadrilaterals like squares and rectangles are special quadrilaterals as these two-dimensional figures have some of the sides and angles equal in them.

Types of Quadrilaterals

As we have discussed earlier, there are six types of Quadrilaterals. Let's discuss each one of them in brief.

Trapezium

The trapezium is one type of quadrilateral in which two opposite sides of one pair are parallel to each other. For example, if we have a trapezium ABCD then side AB is parallel to side CD.

Parallelogram

One type of quadrilateral is a parallelogram in which two opposite sides are equal in length and parallel also the opposite interior angles of the parallelogram are equal. For example, if we have a parallelogram ABCD then side AB is parallel and equal to side CD and side BC is parallel and equal to side AD. Also, the diagonals AC and BD of parallelogram ABCD intersect each other at the midpoint let's name it a midpoint E thus AE = CE and BE = ED.

Rectangle

The rectangle is also one of the types of quadrilaterals in which all the interior angles are equal and all the angles are 90° each. Also, opposite sides of the rectangle are equal in length.

Rhombus

Rhombus is a type of quadrilateral in which all four sides are equal in length. Also, opposite angles of a rhombus are equal and opposite sides of a rhombus are parallel.

Square

One type of quadrilateral is a square. All the sides of a square are equal in length and angles of a square are equal and each angle is 90°.

Kite

Kite is also a type of quadrilateral in which the first two adjacent sides are equal in length and the other two adjacent sides are equal in length. For example, Kite ABCD has side AB = BC and CD = AD.

Points to ponder

  • Kite and Parallelogram aren't the same.

  • A trapezium cannot be called a parallelogram.

  • A parallelogram can be called a Trapezium.

  • A square can also be called a rectangle or a rhombus

  • A rectangle and rhombus cannot be called a square.

  • Square, rectangle, and rhombus which are considered a type of quadrilateral are also a type of parallelograms.

Conclusion

We have concluded from this article that there are six main types of quadrilateral: Trapezium, Parallelogram, Rectangle, Rhombus, Square, and Kite.
