How Many Types Of Motor?

Edited By Team Careers360 | Updated on Mar 20, 2023 05:07 PM IST

There are two types of motor: Direct and alternating motor.

A motor is a mechanical device that transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy. When the current and magnetic field in the motor interact, a force is felt in a direction that is perpendicular to the current and magnetic field. The electric motor produces rotational energy. A machine that produces rotating force is called a motor. The parts of a fundamental motor are as follows:

  • Battery: A battery is a common DC(Direct current) power source for a simple motor. DC is fed into the armature coil by it.

  • Permanent magnets: Permanent magnets provide a strong magnetic field.

  • Commutator: The commutator is in charge of reversing the current in the armature coil. It is composed of two pieces of a metallic ring. The metallic rings of these two components are where the armature coil's two ends are fastened.

  • Brushes: The commutator and the battery terminals are connected by two carbon brushes, which are a part of the electric motor.

  • Armature core: The armature core serves as a mechanical support and a means of holding the armature coil.

  • Armature coil: An armature coil comprises one or more loops of insulated copper wire with a rectangle-like shape.

  • Shaft: The exchange of mechanical power takes place at the axle or shaft. The armature core and commutator are mounted on the shaft.

AC (Alternating Current) Motors and DC (Direct Current) Motors are the two categories of electric motors.

Direct Motor:

A DC motor is a device that transforms DC power into mechanical power. DC current is used to operate it.

Alternating Motor:

During startup, AC motors use less power and have variable speed capabilities.

Examples

  1. AC motor includes Synchronous and Asynchronous types of motor.

(a) Synchronous Motor:

With this type of motor, the rotor rotation frequency is synced with the supply current frequency, and the speed remains constant under fluctuating loads. This motor is employed in machines because it helps maintain a steady motor speed.

(b) Asynchronous Motor: Because of the magnetic field on the rotor, this motor operates on the concept of electromagnetic induction. Depending on the load capacity, it is divided into two categories:

  • Single-Phase

  • Three-Phase

For lighter loads, such as those carried by home appliances, single-phase induction motors are employed.

Conveyor belts, lifting gears, and other industrial make use of three-phase induction motors.

  1. DC Motors includes the Brushed and Brushless categories of the motor.

(a) Brushed motors: They are utilized in appliances with basic control mechanisms. They are employed in both consumer and fundamental industrial applications. It is categorized into four types which are as follows:

  • Series Wound

  • Shunt Wound

  • Compound Wound

  • Permanent Magnet

(b) Brushless motors: Brushless DC Motors are easier to make and have a longer lifespan. They are effective and require little maintenance. They are used in devices like fans, pumps, compressors, and others requiring position and speed control.

One type of brushless motor is a stepper motor.
