GATE, also known as the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, is conducted by the IISC in Bangalore and seven older IITs at Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Madras, Bombay, and Delhi on a rotational basis. It is conducted to accept the entrants into a postgraduate or doctoral programme at sought-after prestigious IITs and several other universities in India or abroad. GATE also helps students get financial assistance from the Ministry of Education during the post-graduate programme and other various government scholarships, along with various PSUs (public sector undertakings) to shortlist the candidates for further screening.
All those candidates who are currently in their 3rd or higher year of their undergraduate degree can give the GATE examination, along with all those students who have already completed government-approved programmes in either engineering, architecture, technology, science, the arts, or commerce. If they are pursuing certification from any professional society, then they must have completed Section A or an equivalent, and those professional societies need to be recognised by MOE, UPSC, or AICTE (like AMIE, AMICE, etc.).
Students studying abroad who wish to take the GATE examination must be in their third or higher year or have completed their undergraduate degree. Those currently undergoing MBBS/BDS courses can give GATE from the beginning of their 5th semester.
There is no restriction from the organising institutes on the number of attempts one can give for the GATE examination. However, various PSUs that regularly shortlist candidates for further phases generally keep the age limit of the person applying to that PSU at 28–30 years old, depending on the PSU for which the candidate is applying.
The same is the case for various admitting institutes, as it is at their discretion to specify the number of times one can attempt the GATE examination before getting qualified for their institute.
The GATE exam is used to assess a person's comprehensive understanding of the undergraduate level subjects for which he or she has applied. It consists of some general aptitude questions and engineering mathematics questions (except for some papers like MA, PH, CY, AR, and GG) along with the core subject questions depending upon the subject for which one has applied. The general aptitude part consists of verbal aptitude questions, quantitative aptitude questions, analytical aptitude questions, and a spatial aptitude part. Questions can be multiple-choice or multiple-select, or they can be numerical answer questions.
A GATE score is valid for three years, but PSUs only ask for the latest GATE score.
There is no age limit for the GATE examination, but a person must fulfil the age criteria set up by the respective PSUs to get shortlisted for PSUs.
GATE assesses a candidate's grasp of the subject for which he has applied along with some general aptitude questions.
There is no qualifying percentage to appear for GATE.
Acceptance into various IITs for a post-graduate or doctoral degree is subject to various criteria set in place by the IITs, like minimum marks in graduation, etc.
