Introduction

  • A note is a type of financial security that obligates loan repayment at a specified interest rate and within a given time frame. Although notes often mature sooner than other debt products, such as bonds, they are similar to bonds in many ways.

  • The name "bank note," dates back to the 14th century and is derived from the Italian "nota di banco," which originally acknowledged the holder's right to collect the precious metal (often gold or silver) deposited with a banker (via a currency account).

  • The Indian rupee is most frequently found as the 10-rupee banknote (10). One of the first notes in the Mahatma Gandhi Series to be released by the Reserve Bank of India was the ten rupee note in 1996. These notes, along with the Mahatma Gandhi New Series notes that were released in January 2018, are currently in use with the 10 rupee coin.

  • Since colonial times, the 10-rupee banknote has been printed, and it has been in continuous production ever since the Reserve Bank of India assumed control of India's currency in 1923.
