Energy is referred to by scientists as the capacity to do work. We, humans, have figured out many ways to transform energy from one form to another and then utilise them to accomplish tasks, thereby enabling modern civilization possible. Walking and bicycling uses energy in our bodies, driving cars on roads and boats through water uses the chemical energy stored in fuels, cooking meals on stoves and making ice in freezers utilizes the heat energy, lighting our homes and workplaces and producing goods need electric energy, and sending astronauts into space utilises multiple forms of energy. This shows how important the term energy is in our life.
As we have discussed earlier, there are numerous types of energy, such as Heat, nuclear, Light, Motion, chemical, Electrical, Gravitational, etc. These energies can be divided into two categories that can be used to do work:
Potential energy: The energy stored in a body due to its position relative to some relative position.
Kinetic energy: The energy acquired by an object due to its motion.
The work required to move an electric charge of one coulomb through an electrical potential difference of one volt is termed a joule. This relationship can also be used to define the volt. Joule is the unit of both energy and work. It is abbreviated as J.
A single electron accelerates from rest across an electric potential difference of one volt in a vacuum, producing an amount of kinetic energy known as an electronvolt (symbol eV, also spelt electron volt and electron-volt). It is a common unit of energy, widely used in the solid state, nuclear, atomic, and particle physics, and astrophysics.
