Introduction

CBSE NCERT Covers a total of 14 chapters in class 11 chemistry. This includes Physical chemistry, Inorganic chemistry, and Organic chemistry. Chemistry is that branch of science that deals with the study of composition, structure and properties of matter. It deals with the study of the changes that different forms of matter undergo under different conditions.

Chapters in Class 11 Chemistry

Chemistry has played an important role in developing many industrially manufactured fertilizers, alkalis, acids, salts, dyes, polymers, drugs, soaps, detergents, metal alloys and other inorganic and organic chemicals including new materials that contribute in a big way to the national economy.

Physical Chemistry

1. Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

This chapter explains the importance of chemistry, and concepts like molecular mass and atomic mass. A few basic theories and laws like Avogadro’s law, Dalton’s atomic theory and the law of conservation of mass are explained in brief in this chapter. You will also solve problems based on determining the molecular weight of compounds, mass per cent and concentration. You will get a clear idea about the empirical and molecular formulae, molarity, molality and mole concept.

2. States of Matter

This chapter explains the intermolecular forces and how they affect the physical state of a substance. It deals with other concepts associated with gaseous and liquid states of matter. This is the main reason why this chapter is important for the exam. Students will be able to understand Boyle’s Law, Charle’s Law, Gay Lussac’s Law and Avogadro Law which carries more marks as per the exam pattern. Problems in finding partial pressure, critical temperature and pressure, Van der Waals force and other intermolecular forces are present in this chapter.

3. Structure of Atom

Students will learn about Thomson’s atomic model, subatomic particles, Bohr’s model, Rutherford’s atomic model and the quantum mechanical model of the atom. Problems with the relationship between frequency and wavelength, the energy associated with electromagnetic radiation and subatomic particles are present in this chapter. You will get to know how to write the electron configurations and the electron transition in different shells.

4. Thermodynamics

Students will learn more about the concepts like terms in thermodynamics, applications, calorimetry, enthalpies, spontaneity and Gibbs energy change and equilibrium.

5. Equilibrium

The concepts discussed in this chapter are – solid-liquid equilibrium, applications of the equilibrium constant, factors affecting equilibria, acids, bases and salts, buffer solutions etc.

6. Redox Reaction

Students will get questions based on the classical idea of a redox reaction, redox reactions in terms of electron transfer reactions, oxidation number and electrode processes.

Inorganic Chemistry

1. Classification of Element and Periodicity

From this chapter, students will also learn about the s-block, p-block, d-block and f-block elements from the periodic table, trends in physical and chemical properties and chemical reactivity.

2. Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure

The topics discussed in this chapter are – VSEPR Theory, Lewis structures, Valence Bond Theory, the polar character of covalent bonds and hydrogen bonding. Students will learn how to draw Lewis dot symbols for molecules, atoms and polyatomic ions.

3. Hydrogen

learn about the preparation and properties of dihydrogen and its applications in our daily life.

4. s- block Elements

Students will learn about the Alkali metals and Alkaline earth metals which are group 1 and group 2 in the periodic table. Some of the concepts like physical and chemical properties of s-block elements, general characteristics of compounds and about important compounds like calcium. The biological importance of calcium and magnesium is also explained clearly in this chapter.

5. p- block Elements

Students will get a gist of the p-block elements, where the last electron enters or is found on the p-subshell. Some of the concepts which you will learn in this chapter are – the boron family, important compounds of boron, uses of aluminium and boron, the carbon family, allotropes of carbon and important compounds of silicon and carbon.

6. Environmental Chemistry

Various concepts which are related to the environment like water pollution, atmospheric pollution, and soil pollution and their reasons are explained briefly in this chapter. Along with this students will also learn about the use of pesticides to reduce soil pollution and strategies to control pollution like waste disposal.

Organic Chemistry

1. General Organic Chemistry

This chapter will introduce you to concepts such as organic compounds, structural representation, classification, nomenclature, isomerism, purification of organic compounds and quantitative analysis.

2. Hydrocarbon

It teaches the students about concepts like alkanes and their preparation from alkyl halides, unsaturated hydrocarbons and carboxylic acids.

Conclusion

These chapters act as the main base or foundation for the further classes.

These concepts give a basic idea and enable one to understand the concepts easily in higher classes even graduation.

These also help in giving guidelines for new inventions and also to be cautious of danger.
