    Introduction

The charge number of an atomic nucleus (symbol Z) is the chemical element's atomic number, also referred to as the nuclear charge number. This is comparable to the proton number (np), or the number of protons present in the nucleus of each atom of that element, for conventional nuclei. Some common chemical elements can be uniquely identified using their atomic number. In a typical, uncharged atom, the atomic number and the number of electrons are identical. To calculate the atomic mass number A, the neutron numbers N and Z of a typical atom are added.

Any atom's relative isotopic mass, expressed in unified atomic mass units, is within 1% of the value A due to the roughly equal masses of protons and neutrons (and the negligible mass of electrons for many purposes) and the fact that the mass defect of the nucleon binding is always small in comparison to the nucleon mass.

Isotope atoms share the same atomic number but differ in their neutron numbers, which causes them to have different masses. The average isotopic mass of an isotopic mixture for that element in a particular environment on Earth (referred to as the relative atomic mass; see monoisotopic elements) is what determines an element's standard atomic weight.

Less than three-quarters of naturally occurring elements are isotope mixtures (see monoisotopic elements). Chemists were able to gauge the amounts of the elements in the 19th century using their relative atomic weights to hydrogen.

The traditional symbol Z is derived from the term "Zahl," which in German means "number." Prior to the current fusion of concepts from physics and chemistry, the order of an element in the periodic table only denoted its numerical position within it. This arrangement roughly, but not perfectly, matched the arrangement of the elements according to their atomic weights.

Since 1915, the term "Atomzahl" (and its English equivalent, "atomic number") has been used frequently in this sense. It was then hypothesised that this Z number indicated the nuclear charge of atoms, and it was later shown that this was the case.

    Example

The atomic number of an atom is the sum of its electron count or the number of protons in its nucleus if it is electrically neutral. like sodium atoms, which have 11 protons and 11 electrons. The sum of the protons and electrons in the Na atom is 11, which is its atomic number.
