“Being Grateful” – the phrase is self-explanatory. Being grateful, in essence, means to be in a state of thankfulness. It is the state where you look around and realise that you are blessed with several big and small things that people around us do not have, and yet we take those things for granted. Things that are matter of everyday to you may be a luxury for many, which they can only aspire to have. Being grateful means to thank the universe for blessing you with whatever you have, because your reality is a dream for many. Being grateful is a practice that develops gradually if you make an effort.
To be grateful means to be in a state of thankfulness for what we’ve been given by the universe. It could be the smallest of things that we often take for granted, for instance, a roof over our heads, the love of parents, opportunity to study, food to eat, and so on.
How It Helps | Being grateful helps us feel positive emotions, and psychology has well established the connection between emotions, thoughts and behaviour. When we see the goodness in everyday things, we feel a better sense of overall well-being. Being thankful makes us optimistic in nature and we learn to accept things with both their positive and negative aspects. Being grateful also increases how much we value relationships, thereby strengthening the interpersonal bonds we share. Practicing gratitude has also been found to have a positive effect on our immune system.

One way is to keep a gratitude journal, in which we write down a few things that we are grateful for each day. This can be small things, like a cup of coffee in the morning, or bigger things, like the support of our family. Sharing our gratitude with others is another way to practice gratitude. We can let people know when we appreciate something they have done for us, whether it is through a simple "thank you" or a more formal expression of appreciation, such as a thank-you note.
Practicing mindfulness is another way to cultivate gratitude. This involves paying attention to the present moment and focusing on the good things in our lives. We can do this through activities like meditation or by simply taking a few moments each day to focus on the things we are grateful for. Finally, helping others is a great way to feel grateful. We can do small acts of kindness, like holding the door open for someone, or we can volunteer our time to help those in need.
In the morning when I sit for breakfast, I always thank god for the food on my table before I begin to eat. I do so because that’s the first meal of the day, and it must be consumed with a good state of mind. I have been practicing this since my school days because my father was always very particular about inculcating this practice in me. He says that the first meal of the day is extremely important, and that we must be careful of what we think while eating. The thoughts while eating are consumed by the mind along with the food.
I practise this towards the actual start of the day and before sleeping as well. When I get up, I always thank god for a new morning and while going to bed, I thank god for whatever I learnt that day. This way, I don’t just pray everyday, but also train my mind about how everything that happens around us is for good, and the tendency to focus on negative things becomes negligible.
