Atoms are known to be electrically neutral, so they must have an equal amount of negative charge and an equal amount of positive charge. Therefore, the positive charge of the atom is due to the presence of protons.
We can therefore say that the proton is an elementary particle with a unit positive charge. Protons were detected from the anode beam. It was found that when a high voltage is applied between the electrodes, light rays are emitted from the anode side, pass through the holes in the cathode, and emit green fluorescence. These rays were called anodic rays, canal rays, or positive rays (due to the presence of positive atoms).
The proton charge is 1.6 x10-19C and the proton mass is 1.67 x 10-24 g.
Since the negative part of the atom is due to the presence of the electron, we can say that the electron is an elementary particle with a negative unit charge.
electrons were discovered from cathode rays. When a high voltage was passed between the electrodes, at very low pressure, a beam of light was directed from the cathode into the hole in the anode, which was found to be a faint greenish color. These were called cathode rays, It has a negative charge (due to the presence of electrons).
The charge of the electron is −1.6 x10-19 and the mass of the electron is 9.11 x 10-28
So, the ratio of the mass of the proton to the mass of an electron is:
1.67*10-249.11*10-27 =1835
So, the mass of the proton is 1835 times heavier than the mass of the electron.
Atoms consist of three parts:
Protons: Protons are the building blocks of atoms. While an atom can gain or lose neutrons and electrons, its identity is tied to the number of protons. The symbol for the number of protons is the capital letter Z.
Neutrons: The number of neutrons in an atom is indicated by the letter N. The atomic mass of an atom is the sum of its protons and neutrons or Z + N. The strong nuclear force binds protons and neutrons around the nucleus to form atoms.
Electrons: Electrons are the smallest particles of atoms. Moreover, it revolves around the nucleus. They also exist in orbitals or shells around the nucleus.More importantly, electrons in subatomic particles have a negative charge. They exist in atoms in both free and bound form. Moreover, they exist in spherical shells of different radii representing energy levels.
