The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts a competitive examination in India every year to select candidates for various civil service positions in the Indian government, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Foreign Service (IFS). The UPSC examination is considered one of the most competitive and prestigious exams in India, and it is highly competitive to get selected for a civil service position through this exam. Around 13 lakh applicants have appeared for the prelims paper of UPSC in 2023. Out of them only 14624 qualified for the mains with 2916 being called for an interview and only 1016 candidates got recommended.

UPSC CSE Analysis

An analysis of the statistics reveals the following,

UPSC CSE 2006 to 2009:

  • The total UPSC vacancies were 3157 (993 per year).
  • Total applicants: 14.52 lakh students (on a average 3.63 lakhs per year).
  • Qualifying students in UPSC Mains were 40,413 (on an average 10,103 per year).
  • Only 7858 students qualified for interviews (on an average of 2435 per year).

UPSC CSE 2020 to 2023:

  • Total vacancies: 3823
  • No of applicants for Prelims: Around 46.03 lakhs.
  • Qualifying students in Mains: 48,214 students.
  • Students who qualified for UPSE CSE interviews: 10,000 students.
  • Number of students who qualified for an interview: 1204.

UPSC IAS Exam Stages

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts a three-stage examination process to select candidates for civil service positions in the Indian government. The stages of the UPSC exam are as follows.

Preliminary Exam: The preliminary exam consists of two objective-type papers: General Studies Paper 1 and General Studies Paper 2. The purpose of the preliminary exam is to shortlist candidates for the main exam.

Main Exam: The main exam consists of nine papers: two qualifying papers in Indian languages and English, and seven papers on various subjects such as Essays, General Studies, and optional subjects. The purpose of the main exam is to evaluate the overall knowledge and academic expertise of the candidates.

Interview: The interview is the final stage of the UPSC exam process. It is a personality test conducted by the UPSC to assess the candidate's suitability for a career in the civil service.

The full form of UPSC is Union Public Service Commission. In India UPSC is popularly known as the IAS (Indian Administrative Service) exam but the official name of this exam is UPSC Civil Services Exam. If a person wants to be an IAS (Indian Administrative Service), IPS (Indian Police Service), or IFS (Indian Foreign Service) in India then he/she has to qualify for the UPSC exam. One must have a graduation degree then only one can appear for this exam. IAS trainee or IAS probationer is the lowest IAS post.
