Introduction

The earth is divided into two equal parts named the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. The line that divides both hemispheres is known as the equator which is also known as the line of 0-degree latitude. Whereas along the side of longitude it is divided into eastern and western hemispheres where the former lies on the east of the prime meridian and the latter lie on the west of the prime meridian. The tropics are the regions that surround the earth’s equator. Based on the latitude the tropics are divided into the tropic of cancer in the northern hemisphere and the tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere. These tropics are also known as “tropical zone” or “torrid zone”.

Tropic of Cancer

  • The tropic of cancer is the point on Earth’s surface at which the sun is directly overhead at its zenith in the Northern Hemisphere or vice versa.

  • It is also known as Northern Tropic because it occurs on the June solstice when the Northern hemisphere is tilted to its maximum extent of the sun.

  • This tropic of cancer usually occurs on June 21st, in tropical regions which can be called as “tropical line”.

  • The tropic of cancer is situated at 23°26′10.7″ towards the Northern hemisphere.

States That Tropic of Cancer Pass-Through

  • The Tropic of cancer only latitude passes through India i.e. in the part of Northern Hemisphere countries that the tropic of cancer passes through, India is one of the countries.

  • In India, the tropic of cancer passes through almost eight states. The eight states are Rajasthan, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram.

  • In Gujarat tropic of cancer passes through Jasdan, in Rajasthan, it passes through Kalinjarh, in Madhya Pradesh, it passes through Shajapur, in Chhattisgarh, it passes through Sunhat, in Jharkhand, it is Lohardaga, in west Bengal it is Krishnanagar, in Tripura it is Udaipur and in Mizoram it is Champhai.

  • Mahi river is the only river that cuts tropics of cancer twice in different regions. It flows through Madhya Pradesh and then joins at Rajasthan and finally enters into Gujarat Panchamahal which directly joins the Arabian Sea.

Conclusion

The tropic of cancer is the latitudinal circle of latitude that runs from the equator to the North Pole. The Tropic of Cancer is the latitude 23.5° north of the equator, where the sun is directly overhead at noon on December 21. This latitude has historically been considered to represent a line that marks the northern limit of where tropical plants can grow.

The Tropic of Cancer is a circle that runs around the Earth parallel to the equator and passes through these points:

- 23.5°N, 0°E (Cape Verde)

- 23.5°N, 30°E (Mauritania)

- 23.5°N, 60°E (Uzbekistan)

- 23.5°N, 90°E (China)

- 23.5°N, 120°W (Ecuador)

- 23.5°N, 150°W (Mexico)

- 23.5º N 173º W

In conclusion, the tropic of cancer is located at 23.5 degrees north of the equator and it's a latitudinal circle of latitude which means it has a northern and southern border. It's located on Earth and it runs from the equator to the North Pole.
