An octagon has eight sides.

In a two-dimensional plane, the octagon is an 8-sided polygon, also known as an 8-gon. The word octagon is taken from the Greek word "oktágōnon". It means eight angles. All of the sides of a regular octagon will be the same length. Each of the interior angles in a normal octagon is equal to 135°, and the total sum of exterior angles of an octagon is equal to 360°. The line segment that joins any two non-adjacent vertices in an octagon is known as the diagonal. It has 20 diagonals. Some examples of octagonal shapes in everyday life are the outline of an umbrella, stop signs at signals etc.

The perimeter of a regular octagon is equal to the sum of all its sides. The area of a regular octagon is given by-

2a^{2}(1+{\sqrt{2}})

Where "a" is the measure of the side of the octagon.

For calculating the area of irregular octagons, we have to divide it in small figures for which we can calculate the area and then add up the area of all the small figures to get the area of the irregular octagon.

Different types of octagons are regular octagons, irregular octagons, convex octagons and concave octagons. While irregular octagons can be either concave or convex, regular octagons are always convex.

There are eight equal sides and eight equal angles in a regular octagon. The length of each side and the angle measure are the same.

Eight of the sides and eight of the angles make up an irregular octagon. Neither the length of all the sides nor the measurement of all the angles is equal. Despite the varying measurements of the inner angles, they still sum to 1080°

A convex octagon has no angles pointing inside or all of its angles pointing outward. The edges of convex octagons extend outwards. In a convex octagon, no interior angle exceeds 180°.

In a concave octagon, at least one edge must point inward. This indicates that in a concave octagon, at least one interior angle is larger than 180°.
