    Introduction

There are 120 root words in English. These are made of 33 consonants and 66 vowels. A root is a word from which a new word is derived with an affix (prefix or suffix). The most basic part of any word. The basic structure of the root is added or appended to become a new word. Understanding the origins of common words will help you infer the meaning of new words and strengthen your vocabulary.

    Suffix

A suffix is a series of characters added to the end of a stem word to change or add to its meaning. These are one of the two main types of affixes, prefixes are groups of letters at the beginning of a word that changes its meaning. One way to understand the meaning of a new word is to analyse the different parts of the word and the meaning of those parts. Many new words are formed by adding an affix to the beginning or end of a Latin or Greek root or stem. When affixes are added to the beginning of a root or stem word, they are called prefixes. For example, the most common prefix is UN- which means not or vice versa. If you add un- to the word happy, the new word becomes unhappy, meaning not happy. When affixes are added to the end of a root or stem word, they are called suffixes. The most common suffixes are -s and -es, which mean multiple (or multiples) words. Adding -es to a wish changes the meaning of the word to multiple wishes.

    Affixes

Verbal affixes often refer to the physical attachment of something, such as when labelling a folder, but they can be used more generally to describe the addition of something. You can sign the contract. If you like grammar, you may already know that the noun forms of affixes refer to letters or words that can be attached to other base words to change their meaning. For example, the prefix un- is affixed.
