Introduction

The human skeletal system gives the body solid support. At birth, a human is made up of 270 bones, but as they fuse as they get older, the number of bones falls to 206. The human skeletal system shields the body's interior organs from physical harm. The axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton are two different parts of the human skeleton. The vertical column, the rib cage, and other related bones make up the axial skeleton. The shoulder girdle, pelvic girdle, and bones of the upper and lower limbs make up the appendicular skeleton, which is connected to the axial skeleton.

Six main tasks are carried out by the human skeleton system: movement, support, defence, blood cell formation, mineral storage, and endocrine regulation. The skeleton system supports your body weight and assists in movement. You can move with the assistance of your joints, connective tissue, and muscles. The internal organs are shielded by the skeletal system; for instance, your skull shields your brain, and your rib cage shields your lungs, heart, and liver. The skeletal system's bones are home to bone marrow, which creates blood cells. Your body's supply of calcium and vitamin D is stored in your bones.

Rib Cage

The ribs are the bony support structure of the thoracic cavity. All animals have these flat, slender, and curving strips of bone. The sternum and breast bone (sternum) are connected ventrally and dorsally, respectively, to form the rib cage. The sternum, the 12 pairs of ribs, the 12 thoracic vertebrae, and the costal cartilage make up the rib cage. The ribs and vertebral bodies are joined at the back. The first rib head articulates with a single vertebra, as do the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth rib heads.

Although the ribs are the main component of the thoracic cage that protects the thoracic organs, their main function is to facilitate breathing. The ribs come in 12 pairs. The costovertebral joint connects each rib posteriorly to two thoracic vertebrae. The first rib only articulates with the first thoracic vertebra, which is an exception to this norm. The ribs are divided into three groups based on how they adhere to the sternum: true, false, and floating ribs.

  • Ribs 1–7, which make up the actual ribs, are immediately joined to the sternum by their costal cartilages. The sternocostal joints hold them to the sternum.

  • The costal cartilages of the false ribs (8, 9, and 10) connect to the seventh costal cartilage through the costochondral joint, making them indirectly attached to the sternum.

  • The sternum does not articulate at all with the floating ribs (11, 12).

Conclusion

There are 12 pairs (24 ribs) of ribs. Each rib is a thin flat bone connected dorsally to the vertebral column and ventrally to the sternum.
