Introduction

  • Plants can grow anywhere on the planet like they grow on mountains, in valleys, in deserts, in fresh and saltwater. Plants come in all shapes and sizes like from the smallest seedling to the towering Giant Sequoias. Not only are plants beautiful to look at, but they also play an important role in keeping people, animals, and the most important to the Earth healthy.

  • They also provide food, medicine, shelter, and the oxygen which we need to breathe. Plants are also a direct or indirect source of the food we eat.

  • Herbivores ( which are also called as plant eaters) and omnivores (also known as animal and plant eaters) depend on plants for their survival. Even carnivores (which are also called as meat eaters) , they depend on plants because they often prey on animals that eat plants. Plants provide shelter and habitats to many animals.

  • Soil also needs plants. When plants die, soil decomposes and provides topsoil which is rich in nutrients and it helps seeds to germinate and grow into seedlings. Plants also help to slow erosion as their roots hold soil in place and when plants carry out photosynthesis, they take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen for all of us to breathe.

Main Content

The basic parts of plants are: roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds.

The function of each plant part is given below. They are

  1. ` Roots

They anchor the plants in the soil and also absorb the nutrients and water which are needed by the rest of the plant.

  1. ` Stems

Stems support the upper part of the plant and also act as a transport system for nutrients, water, sugar, and starches. Whereas photosynthesis can occur in the stem of some plants like cacti, celery, asparagus, and bananas.

  1. ` Leaves

Leaves are the parts of the plant where photosynthesis mostly occurs and where food for the plant is made. Plant Parts are chlorophyll, as they capture light energy and uses it to convert water and carbon dioxide into plant food and oxygen.

  1. ` Flowers

Flowers are the reproductive part of plants. They most often have showy petals and fragrances to attract pollinators like birds, bees, and other insects. Flowers have four main parts. They are- petals, stamen (anther and filament), pistil (stigma, style and ovary), and sepals. After flowers are pollinated and fertilized then they produce seeds in the ovary of the flower.

  1. ` Fruits

Fruits are the fleshy substances which usually surround seeds. As they protect the seeds and attract animals to eat them and also help in seed dispersal.

  1. ` Seeds

Seeds contain plant material which can develop into another plant and this plant material is known as an embryo. They are covered with a protective seed coat and have one or two cotyledons.

Conclusion

Plants have only six basic parts , they are roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds.
