Cockroaches have a total of 10 pairs of spiracles. A cockroach has two thoracic and right abdomen spiracles.
A spiracle or stigma is a hole in the exoskeleton of insects and certain spiders that allows air to enter the trachea. Tracheal tubes are the primary delivery method of oxygen into the tissues of insects. To regulate water loss, the spiracles may be opened and closed efficiently. This is accomplished by contracting the muscles closest to the spiracle. The muscle relaxes to open. The Central Nervous System controls the nearby muscle but may also respond to localized chemical inputs. Several aquatic insects use similar or alternative closure mechanisms to keep water out of the trachea. The duration and timing of spiracle closures can alter the organism's breathing rates. Hairs may also surround spiracles to reduce airflow around the aperture and, consequently, water loss.
Respiration in Cockroaches:
The respiratory system of a cockroach is a network of trachea known as the tracheal system. They breathe through little apertures known as spiracles. Muscular sphincters control these openings. They take in oxygen-rich air via spiracles that enter the tracheal tubes. Tracheal tubes are a network of air tubes designed to allow for smooth gas exchange. These are exclusively found in insects. The air then rushes into the tracheal passages and diffuses into the various body tissues and cells. The trachea is then split into smaller tubes known as tracheoles. Tracheoles contain a network of fluids that run throughout the insect's body. Carbon dioxide-rich air rushes towards the tracheal tubes before being expelled through the spiracles.
Mechanism of respiration:
In cockroaches, breathing occurs in two stages.
(i) Inspiration
(ii) Expiration
Inspiration: Inspiration is inhaling atmospheric air or oxygen into the tracheal system. In the cockroach, inspiration is a passive process. When the tergo sternal muscles relax, the space in the body cavity expands, and the pressure decreases. The thoracic spiracles remain open, whereas the abdominal spiracles remain closed. The air is then delivered to the tracheoles and diffuses into the tissues via the tracheal fluid. Carbon dioxide is created in tissues as a result of metabolism.
Expiration: Expiration in cockroaches is an active process through which carbon dioxide is expelled. When the tergo sternal muscles contract, the space in the body hole shrinks, and pressure rises. The thoracic spiracles are closed, while the stomach spiracles remain open. Cockroaches release a large amount of carbon dioxide by diffusion through the cuticle. The nervous system controls and coordinates breathing movements in cockroaches.
