Around 600 medical institutions in India provide MBBS and BDS programmes that the Medical Council of India approves.

Medical courses are the most popular among young students. Every year, medical aspirants prepare for entrance tests such as NEET to get admission to top medical institutions in India. These colleges provide a variety of medical degrees at both the postgraduate and undergraduate levels. After passing the NEET Exam, students can pick any degree for their medical studies, such as BDS, MBBS, MD, or MS, to gain admission to the best medical institutions in India.

Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh have the most medical colleges in India. Manipur, Tripura, Chandigarh, Goa, and Sikkim have the fewest.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi: AIIMS (New Delhi) was initially developed as a super-specialty tertiary care institution with significant emphasis on research and specialised training facilities. The basic medical course at the bachelor's degree level is MBBS. Following this, a master's degree with specialisation in general surgery, general internal medicine, paediatrics, and other subjects is available. Super specialties are those healthcare disciplines whose practitioners need specialist certification after graduation. AIIMS (New Delhi) offers at least 45 super specialties at the upper-master's degree level. AIIMS also provides research courses at the MSc and PhD levels.

Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore: MBBS, 57 post-graduate diploma and degree medical degrees, 44 allied health science courses, 14 certificate courses in nursing and other professions, and 52 fellowship courses are available at the college. Each year, around 2500 students enrol. The MBBS programme is divided into 4.5 years of academics and 1 year of a mandatory rotating medical internship. A block placement at community health centres is essential to medical education. Students are sent to mission hospitals and secondary care facilities.

Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune: A total of 150 students, 115 males, 30 girls, and five international nationalities are admitted to the undergraduate MBBS programme. Admission is based on the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET), followed by an interview and medical assessment. Ten seats are earmarked for ST and SC applicants. Students are not permitted to marry or be married during the course. Upon successful completion of the MBBS, they are required to serve in the Armed Forces medical units for seven years.
