A crore is a natural number in the Indian number system, written as 1,00,00,000 and equal to 100 lakhs. 1 crore is equivalent to ten million in the international numbering system. Crore is mainly used in countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal to refer to large amounts of money. Sri Lankans do not use the exact word crore but do use the term 'Kodi'. The term "crore" comes from the Prakrit word, “Krodi”, which is derived from the Sanskrit word Koti. Koti means crore in the Indian numeral system. Crore has various regional names. Crore is abbreviated as Cr. So if you want to write 1 crore for short, you can write 1 cr, or 2 cr as 2 crores, etc.
Lakh, sometimes written as lac, is defined as a unit in the Indian numeral system equal to 100,000, meaning hundred thousand. Units are often represented by the symbol L. In the 2, 2, 3 rule of number grouping in India, lakh is usually expressed as 1,00,000. For example, ₹700,000 in India becomes 7 lakhs and is expressed as 3 lakhs or INR 3,00,000. The device is very popular in countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan. However, it is commonly used in Sri Lankan, Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi English.
The number one lakh can be written as 100,000
The number one crore can be written as 1,00,00,000
∴The number of lakhs that make up 1 crore is given by
=1,00,00,000 divided by 1,00,000
=100
Thus, one crore is equal to one hundred lakhs.
Hence, we have learnt that 100 lakhs are equivalent to 1 crore.
