A Line Segment is a part of the line, which has two endpoints, and a fixed length. One is the beginning point, and the other is the ending point. A line is simply a straight long strip, or wire with no endpoints, and no fixed length. A region or part of a fixed length that we want to cut out from that line, is known as the Line Segment. A Line Segment can also be defined as a lane between two endpoints that can be measured. It has a definite length, which helps in forming the various types of polygons.
A Line Segment is denoted with the help of a bar (-) over the name of line, as mentioned below:
\overline{\rm AB}
We have already studied that a line segment has two endpoints. Each endpoint has its coordinates x and y. If we have the values of coordinates, it is easier to calculate the length of line segment with the help of the Distance formula:
\overline{AB}=\sqrt{(x_{2}-x_{1})^{2}+(y_{2}-y_{1})^{2}}
These are a few most common examples that we can observe in 2D geometry, where all the polygons can be drawn by using different line segments.
A Triangle is a polygon, which is made up of three line segments.
A Square is a special polygon of four equal sides that can be drawn by joining four equal line segments.
A Pentagon contains five line segments.
Similarly, we can draw more polygons like rectangles, hexagons, heptagons, octagons, and more, with the help of line segments of various fixed lengths.
As we have learnt that a line segment is part of a straight line that joins two given points. And, thus a line segment has two endpoints.
