There are 35 elements in the p block of the periodic table. The periodic table is a table that consists of various chemical elements that are arranged in rows in order of their atomic number. The elements are arranged in the increasing order of their atomic number and are grouped with other elements that are of similar chemical properties. These elements are classified into four blocks depending on the type of orbital receiving the valence electrons. The four blocks are the s block, p block, d block and f block. The s block is located on the left side of the table, the p block is on the right side, and the d block is placed in between the s block and p block while the f block is placed below the other blocks in the table.
p block elements are those elements in which the last electron enters any of the three p-orbitals of their respective shell. A p-subshell has three degenerate p-orbitals which can each accommodate two electrons, hence, there are a total of six groups of p-block elements. The p block starts from the 13th group and goes up to the 18th group of the periodic table. There are a total of 35 elements in the p block which consists of the Boron family, Carbon family, Nitrogen family, Oxygen family, Fluorine family and Neon family.
The p-block elements are also called standard components to differentiate them from the sequence of transformation and internal transformation elements. The outer electron configuration of the p block elements is ns2 np(1-6). It is the only block of the periodic table in which non-metals and metalloids exist. The non-metallic character of the p-block elements decreases down the group.
There are 35 elements present in the p-block of the periodic table. These elements belong to the 13th to 18th group in the table and consist of the Boron family, Carbon family, Nitrogen family, Oxygen family, Fluorine family and Neon family.
