History of January

The ancient Roman Calendar initially consisted of ten months, and its first month was March. January and February were not part of this. Around 700 BCE, the Roman king Numa Pompilius is said to add two more months for the winter season and later described as winter months. January was known as menses Januaries, which was the month of Janus. It initially contained 29 days and came after December month, but the Roman year still began in March. In 154 BCE, a dissent oppressed the Roman Council to switch the beginning of the year from ‘March’ to ‘January 1’. Around 153 BCE, January officially became the first month of the year. Most Romans still celebrate the month of March as the New Year month. In 46 BCE, the former Roman dictator Julius Caesar established a new Calendar system and named it the Julian Calendar. Further, he added ten more days to the Calendar and introduced the leap year. From here, January was extended from 29 to 31 days. Since then, January officially contains 31 days, consistently every year.
