During the two hundred years preceding 1947, Indians had to endure unending hardships caused by the British. British monarchs engaged in racial discrimination, political and social persecution, the killing of rebellious masses, and other atrocities. Our freedom fighters were able to overturn the erroneous British governing structure after the tremendous sacrifices, numerous battles and hardships. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was appointed as India's first Prime Minister upon independence. He raised our tricolour flag for the first time at the Red Fort in New Delhi, the national capital. Every year since then, we have celebrated Independence Day in the Red Fort in New Delhi.

Today, we are quite delighted since India's freedom has enabled us to live by raising our heads without being subordinated to anyone. On this day, we all experience an overwhelming sense of pride and patriotism.
