Isomers are different molecules with the same formula but different structures. Structural isomers are isomers of different types of isomers that have different bonding structures but the same molecular formula. Bonded geometry refers to how the atoms in a molecule are connected. Pentane is an organic compound belonging to the alkane group. Organic compounds without unsaturation (double or triple bonds) are called alkanes. The molecular formula of pentane is
\mathrm{C}_5 \mathrm{H}_{12}
.
The five carbon atoms present in pentane can rearrange in three different ways forming the three structural isomers of pentane. Let's look at the arrangement of carbon atoms.
In the first configuration, the carbon atoms are aligned to form a linear chain. This isomer is called n-pentane and has the formula
\mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{CH}_2 \mathrm{CH}_2 \mathrm{CH}_2 \mathrm{CH}_3
.
In the second configuration, pentane's four carbon atoms are in a straight chain and one carbon atom is branched to her second carbon atom in the straight chain. This isomer is known as isopentane and has the formula
\mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{CH}\left(\mathrm{CH}_3\right) \mathrm{CH}_2 \mathrm{CH}_3
.
Let's look at the structure of isopentane.
In the third configuration, three of the pentane carbon atoms are in a straight chain and two carbon atoms are branched to the central carbon atom of the straight chain. This isomer is called neopentane and its formula is
\mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{C}\left(\mathrm{CH}_3\right)_2 \mathrm{CH}_3
.
Structural isomers are molecules that have the same chemical formula but differ in the arrangement of atoms and bonding patterns.
Since pentane is an organic compound with 5 carbon atoms and ends with -an, we can conclude that it contains only single bonds (it is a saturated molecule).
It has the molecular formula of
\mathrm{C}_5 \mathrm{H}_{12}
Pentane has three structural isomers.
n-pentane, isopentane, neopentane. In n-pentane or pentane, the five carbon atoms are made up of straight chains with no branches.
In this isomer, the first of her four carbon atoms is arranged in a linear chain and the fifth carbon atom is attached to her second carbon atom in the linear chain to form a branch.
In this isomer, neopentane or 2,2-dimethylpropane, three carbon atoms are consecutively grouped to form a linear chain, and two additional carbon atoms are attached to the central carbon atom to form two branches.
Pentane has three structural isomers.
If the carbon atoms in the straight chain are branched, the carbon atoms are numbered starting with the terminal carbon closest to the branched carbon and this should be done to ensure that each isomer is different. So don't confuse these two structures shown below. Also, do not double them when calculating the number of structural isomers.
