8.4 g of hydrochloric acid will react with 5 g of manganese dioxide. Chlorine can be easily prepared in the laboratory by taking concentrated Hydrochloric acid with manganese dioxide. MnO2 reacts exothermically with hydrochloric acid to produce magnesium dichloride, water, and heat.
The reaction of conc. HCl with manganese dioxide can be written as follows:
\mathrm{MnO}_2+\mathrm{4HCl} \rightarrow \mathrm{MnCl}_2+\mathrm{Cl}_2+2 \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}
Manganese dioxide is a type of inorganic compound with the chemical formula MnO2. It is a black or brown-coloured solid and occurs in nature as mineral pyrolusite. It is the main ore of Mn and a constituent of manganese nodules. Manganese dioxide is a strong oxidizing agent.
The main use of MnO2 is in making dry-cell batteries like alkaline batteries and zinc-carbon batteries. Mn is also used in preparing Potassium permanganate. It is also a strong oxidizing agent. Manganese oxide is used in organic synthesis. For example, it is used in the oxidation of allylic alcohols.
1 mol (55 + 2 × 16 = 87 g) of MnO2 reacts completely with 4 mol (4 × 36.5 = 146 g) of HCl.
Now, 87 g of MnO2 will react with 146 g of HCl.
So, 5.0 g of MnO2 will react with (5 X 146)/87 g of HCl.
5.0 g of MnO2 will react with 8.3 g of HCl.
Therefore, 8.4 g of HCl will react entirely with 5 g of manganese dioxide.
Manganese is an essential nutrient which occurs in many foods having plant and animal origin. The manganese levels occurring naturally vary from about 2-0 ppm in nuts, dried fruits, cereals, and non-leafy vegetables to less than 1 ppm in food having animal origin.
MnCl2 is a type of rose-coloured deliquescent crystal that is extremely soluble in water, its melting point is 650°C and boils at 1190°C. Its tetrahedral form is MnCI2.4H2O, which melts at 58°C and loses water at 198°C. It is used as a catalyst in dyes, paints, pharmaceuticals, and fertilizers, and for many other purposes.
It is mainly used in the production of dry-cell batteries. Manganese chloride is used in the pharmaceutical industry and as a dietary supplement and is also added to fertilizers.
It is a source of manganese that acts as a nutrient and dietary supplement and exists as crystals that are readily soluble at room temperature (22°c) water and are highly soluble in hot water.
The reaction between manganese dioxide and hydrochloric acid is a type of exothermic reaction where heat is released. It is a type of redox reaction and the products obtained in this reaction are manganese (ii) chloride, water as well as heat. 5 g of manganese (ii) chloride reacts completely with 8.4 g of hydrochloric acid.
