What Is An IIT?

Before knowing seats and their distribution in different states, first, let's study what is IIT and NIT.

IIT stands for Indian Institutes of Technology. They are a group of autonomous public engineering and technology institutes of higher education in India. IITs are among the most prestigious engineering institutes in India and are known for their high-quality education and research in engineering and technology.

What Is NIT?

NIT stands for National Institute of Technology. The NITs were created to provide quality education in engineering and technology to students across the country and to serve as a feeder institution for the Indian engineering industry.

The NITs are considered to be among the top engineering institutes in India, after the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). There are 31 NITs in India, which are spread across the country

IIT Seats In Different States

There are more than 16,500 seats at IIT.

There are 23 IITs in different states. The description of these institutes are given below:

  • IIT Delhi: This institute was established in Delhi in 1961. There are 1209 seats at IIT Delhi.

  • IIT Kharagpur: This institute was established in 1951 in West Bengal. There are 1869 seats in IIT Kharagpur.

  • IIT Madras: This was established in 1959 in Tamilnadu. There are 1133 seats at IIT Madras.

  • IIT Bombay: This was established in 1958 in Maharashtra. There are 1360 seats in IIT Maharashtra.

  • IIT Kanpur: This was established in 1959 in Uttar Pradesh. There are 1210 seats in IIT Kanpur.

  • IIT Guwahati: This was established in Assam in 1994. There are 952 seats at IIT Guwahati.

  • IIT Roorkee: This was established in Uttarakhand in 2001. There are 1353 seats at IIT Roorkee.

  • IIT Bhuvneshwar: This was established in 2008 in Odisha. There are 475 seats at IIT Bhubaneswar.

  • IIT Ropar: This was established in 2008 in Punjab. There are 395 seats at IIT Ropar.

  • IIT Hyderabad: This was established in 2008 in Telangana. There are 505 seats at IIT Hyderabad.

  • IIT Gandhinagar: This was established in Gujarat in 2008. There are 288 seats at IIT Gandhinagar.

  • IIT Jodhpur: This was established in Rajasthan in 2008. There are 530 seats at IIT Jodhpur.

  • IIT Patna: This was established in 2008 in Bihar. There are 582 seats at IIT Patna.

  • IIT Mandi: This was established in 2009 in Himachal Pradesh. There are 336 in IIT Mandi.

  • IIT Indore: This was established in 2009 in Madhya Pradesh. There are 360 seats at IIT Indore.

  • IIT Varanasi: This was established in 2012 in Uttar Pradesh. There are 1589 seats in IIT Varanasi.

  • IIT Jammu: This was established in 2016 in Jammu and Kashmir. There are 240 seats at IIT Jammu.

  • IIT Goa: This was established in 2016 in Goa. There are 157 seats at IIT Goa.

  • IIT Bhilai: This was established in 2016 in Chhattisgarh. There are 190 seats at IIT Bhilai.

  • IIT Dharwad: This was established in 2016 in Karnataka. There are 310 seats at IIT Dharwad.

  • IIT Dhanbad: This was established in Jharkhand in 2016. There are 1125 seats at IIT Dhanbad.

  • IIT Tirupati: This was established in 2015 in Andhra Pradesh. There are 237 seats at IIT Tirupati.

  • IIT Palakkad: This was established in 2015 in Kerala. There are 203 seats in Palakkad.

There are some supernumerary seats in IIT, allowing only female candidates to take admission to these seats. This was done to increase the number of female candidates in engineering colleges.

NIT Seats In Different States

All 31 NIT colleges have 23,997 seats for undergraduate students.
