Birth Control: Forms, Options, Risks & Effectiveness, Information, Types

Edited By Team Careers360 | Updated on Feb 06, 2024 05:03 PM IST

Contraception, sometimes referred to as birth control, is a method of preventing pregnancy. There are numerous varieties of birth control. Birth control is only effective when it is applied correctly. Use birth control if you're sexually active and don't want a child. You risk getting pregnant every time you engage in unprotected sex.

What is Birth Control?

The use of techniques or equipment to avoid unintended pregnancy is known as birth control, also known by the names contraception, anticonception, and fertility control. Although birth control has been practised since antiquity, modern times saw the development of reliable birth control technologies. Family planning includes making birth control options available and using them. Birth control availability may be restricted or discouraged in some cultures because they view it as immoral, unreligious, or politically unwise.

How does Birth Control Work?

Each method of birth control functions differently. It operates in a variety of ways, such as:

  • Stopping sperm from getting to an egg.

  • Preventing the release of an egg from your ovary.

  • Sperm is damaged such that it cannot swim to an egg.

  • Causing your cervical mucus to thicken so that sperm cannot pass through it.

  • Altering the uterine lining's thickness to prevent egg implantation.

Most Effective Forms of Birth Control

The best method of birth control is to abstain from sexual activity (abstinence). This can be challenging to sustain, even for couples who are highly motivated. It's crucial to plan ahead and have a backup method of birth control in mind.

Birth control only functions when it is applied correctly and regularly. The most effective birth control methods are typically those which are easier to use and don't need much upkeep. These methods include sterilisation, intrauterine devices (IUDs), and birth control implants.

Those are the least effective forms of birth control, such as pulling out or fertility awareness. It's usually ideal to use two forms of birth control, such as a condom and a birth control pill. This is because you are simultaneously employing a barrier method, taking hormone medication, and protecting yourself from STIs.

What are the Types of Birth Control?

Birth control methods include:

  • Barrier methods: Sperm cannot enter your uterus because of barriers. Every time you have sex, a barrier mechanism is used.

  • Hormonal medication and devices: These procedures alter the environment in your uterus and cervix or stop ovulation using hormones. Some hormone treatments are daily (short-acting), while others are inserted by your doctor into your arm or uterus (long-acting).

  • Sterilisation: Sterilization is surgery to end pregnancy forever. There are sterilisation techniques for both men and women.

  • Fertility awareness: Natural birth control strategies are used in the field of fertility awareness. Another name for this is natural family planning.

  • Emergency contraception: If your birth control stops working, emergency contraception protects you from becoming pregnant. This can be viewed as your final "safety net" against pregnancy.

  • Abstinence: Avoiding sexual activity in order to avoid getting pregnant.

Effect on Health

In underdeveloped nations, the use of contraception is thought to have reduced the rate of maternal mortality by 40% (approximately 270,000 deaths avoided in 2008). If the demand for birth control were fully satiated, it might avert 70% of deaths. These advantages are attained by decreasing the frequency of unintended pregnancies that lead to unsafe abortions and preventing pregnancies in high-risk individuals.

By extending the interval between pregnancies, birth control also increases the chance that a kid will survive in underdeveloped nations. The outcomes are worse in this demographic when a mother becomes pregnant within eighteen months of a prior delivery. Women are recommended to try getting pregnant in this situation whenever they are ready because delaying another pregnancy after a miscarriage does not seem to change the risk.

Birth Control Movement

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the birth control movement grew. Based on Thomas Malthus' theories, the Malthusian League was founded in the United Kingdom in 1877 to inform people about the value of family planning and to fight to eliminate sanctions against promoting birth control. It was established during Annie Besant and Charles Bradlaugh's "Knowlton trial," in which they were accused of distributing information on various birth control methods.

In 1921, Marie Stopes and the Malthusian League founded the first permanent birth-control clinic in Britain. The clinic, which was administered by midwives with assistance from visiting doctors, gave women advice on birth control and showed them how to use a cervical cap. By presenting contraception in scientific terms during the 1920s, her clinic helped make it acceptable.

Female Contraception

Unwanted pregnancies are a serious issue for women's health. The rate of unplanned pregnancies in the US dropped from 51% in 2008 to 45% in 2011. 1,2 Given the abundance of secure and reliable contraceptive techniques, the rate has decreased, but it is still too high. The effects of unplanned pregnancies include delayed prenatal care, early exposure to alcohol, drugs, or smoking, low birth weight, and fewer opportunities for postpartum breastfeeding.

The most widely used contraceptives are still condoms and combined oral contraceptive tablets (COCs). Because of their great efficacy, recommendations strongly suggest progestin-only subdermal implants and intrauterine devices (IUDs) as first-line choices for the majority of women. Women who use these LARC methods (Long-acting reversible contraceptives) benefit from not having to worry about forgetting to take, use, or implant their contraceptives and from not needing to schedule yearly appointments for refills. Compared to other methods of contraception, including combination hormonal contraception, LARC users have much higher 3-year overall continuation rates.

What are the Natural Contraception Methods?

Although they require periodic abstinence, natural contraceptive methods are probably the safest to prevent pregnancy. Some of the strategies have a high failure rate, and it necessitates persistent self-control. Natural contraception has the following benefits:

  • No devices are required

  • No cost

  • No surgical interference with the body

Types of Natural Contraception

There are three types of natural contraception:

  • Coitus interruptus

  • Lactational amenorrhea

  • Natural family planning

Coitus Interruptus

Coitus interruptus is the term for the act of extracting the penis from the vagina before ejaculating.

Its advantages are:

  • Practised at any moment.

  • Theoretical reduction of the chance of sexually transmitted illnesses being transmitted (STDs)

Its disadvantage is that it requires perfect awareness and enormous self-control.

Lactational Amenorrhea

When a baby is born, and the woman is still breastfeeding and hasn't started her period, vaginal sex may not result in pregnancy for roughly six months. This contraceptive technique needs:

  • Feeding the infant every four hours throughout the day and every six hours at night.

  • Avoiding giving the infant any additional food or formula.

  • The body naturally reduces ovulation during nursing by producing less luteinising hormone, which promotes egg maturation and release. The length of time following childbirth, the frequency and duration of breastfeeding, and the absence of ovulation all affect this phase.

Its advantages are:

  • Rapid uterine involution (return to normal size).

  • Stops the menstrual cycle.

  • Aids in weight loss after delivery.

Its disadvantages are:

  • Uncertain when fertility will return.

  • It could be challenging to breastfeed frequently without additional nutrients.

  • If the mother is infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), this procedure cannot be employed.

Natural Family Planning

Natural family planning calls for periodic abstention from sex while the woman is in her reproductive phase when ovulation takes place. There are three ways to determine the fertile period:

  • Calendar approach: Ovulation often takes place 12 to 16 days prior to the subsequent menstruation. Based on the supposition that the ovum and sperm are viable for 24 and 48 hours, respectively, the abstinence period is 18 to 11 days prior to the upcoming period.

  • Method for measuring cervical mucus: This technique aims to measure the rise in cervical mucus production that occurs during ovulation.

  • Symptothermal technique: Before the egg matures, the woman's basal temperature is significantly lower, and it increases by 0.2 to 0.5 C following ovulation. The end of the fertile phase is signalled by an increase in temperature following ovulation.

Side Effects of Birth Control

Various birth control methods can have a variety of adverse effects. Most people won't suffer adverse effects from a procedure, let alone all of them. The likelihood of experiencing pregnancy-related adverse effects increases with technique efficacy.

Coitus interruptus, fertility awareness-based, and LAM may have few, if any, unwanted adverse effects. Some types of periodic abstinence advocate checking the cervix; however, sticking your fingers inside your vagina to do so could disrupt the environment there. The first postpartum period of a woman may not come on until later than would be anticipated under other nursing techniques if LAM guidelines are followed.

Need for Birth Control

A guy inserts his penis into a woman's vagina and slides it in and out while the lady rotates her hips during sexual contact. The man's penis feels pressure from the warm, velvety vagina. The in-and-out movements and these sensations stimulate the penis, resulting in an orgasm for the guy.

When a guy is having an orgasm, his penis spasms and goes through a sequence of rhythmic contractions, which causes him to ejaculate (releases semen into the vagina). Semen has the power to impregnate the female. Men and women generally desire to have intercourse much more frequently than they want to have children since it is typically highly enjoyable.

Birth control allows them to engage in sexual activity while significantly decreasing the likelihood of the woman becoming pregnant.

Types of Contraception You Can Use to Prevent Pregnancy

The Condom

The condom is the only method of birth control that can both prevent pregnancy and protect against the majority of STIs. This hormone-free, on-demand method of contraception is portable and may be simply taken around. Both male and female variants are available.

The Oral Contraceptive Pill

It is a tiny tablet that is taken once a day. The oral contraceptive pill is the method of contraception that Australian women report using the most frequently. Finding the correct tablet for you requires choosing from among a variety of available options. While the small pill only includes progestin, the combination tablet also contains oestrogen. The pill may have many advantages, but it's crucial to remember to take it on schedule.

Intrauterine Device (IUD)

This tiny, T-shaped device is inserted into a woman's uterus by a qualified healthcare professional and is constructed of copper and plastic or a substance containing progesterone hormone. It is a reversible, long-acting method of contraception that, depending on the kind, may be used for three to ten years.

The Contraceptive Implant

In this technique, a small, flexible rod that releases a progesterone analogue is implanted beneath the skin of the female patient's upper arm. The hormone thickens the cervical mucus, which makes it more difficult for sperm to enter the womb, and prevents the ovary from releasing the egg. The rod must be fitted and removed from the implant using a brief process under local anaesthesia, and the implant needs to be changed after three years.

The Contraceptive Injection

A synthetic progestogen hormone is present in the injection. The hormone is injected into a woman's buttock or upper arm, and over the course of the following 12 weeks, it slowly releases into circulation.

Emergency Contraceptive Pill

If no contraception was used, a condom broke during sex, or a woman experienced sexual assault, the Emergency Contraception Pill can be taken to prevent pregnancy after sex.

It can be effective for up to 5 days after unprotected sex, despite the fact that it is sometimes referred to as the "morning after" pill. It functions best when used as soon as possible; when used within the first three days of having sex, it prevents about 85% of expected pregnancies.

Contraceptive Ring

This technique involves inserting a flexible plastic ring into the vagina, where it continuously releases hormones. After three weeks, you take it out, give yourself a week's vacation, and then replace it. The hormones oestrogen and progestogen are released by the ring. These hormones are the same ones that are present in the combined oral contraceptive pill, just in smaller amounts.

A tiny, soft silicon dome called a diaphragm is put into the vagina to block sperm from reaching the uterus. It puts a physical barrier between the man's sperm and the woman's egg, much like a condom.

Through open or minimally invasive surgery, sterilisation is the process of entirely removing the body's capacity for reproduction. It is a long-term technique of birth control that is appropriate for those who are certain they will never desire children or do not want anymore. Both men and women can get sterilised, and the procedure is done in a hospital under general anaesthesia.

More than 80% of women will become pregnant if they don't utilise contraception. Teenage girls are extremely fertile, making it impossible to avoid becoming pregnant after sexual activity. This is the primary justification for why using contraception is crucial. Abstinence is the only method by which you may be absolutely certain that you have not gotten pregnant, even though the technical methods of contraception outlined above are all successful.

Frequently Asked Question (FAQs)

1. What is the best type of birth control?

The IUD and implant are the most user-friendly and reliable forms of birth control, and they also work the best at preventing conception. If used properly, other birth control methods, such as the pill, ring, patch, and injection, are also quite effective at preventing pregnancy.

2. What does birth control do to your body?

The most frequent adverse effects are headaches, nausea, aching breasts, and spotting or bleeding between periods (this is more frequent with progestin-only pills). However, symptoms often disappear within two to three months and don't affect everyone who takes the medication. You shouldn't feel ill or unpleasant while using birth control.

3. How effective are birth control methods?

There are many different methods and gadgets for birth control that can stop conception. These techniques can be used on both men and women. Only a few of the numerous approaches are trustworthy. The method's efficacy is based on how meticulously it is applied.

4. What is natural birth control, and is it safe?

Natural birth control is a way to avoid getting pregnant without using drugs or other artificial means. Based on knowledge and observations of a woman's body and menstrual cycle, several ideas have been developed.

5. What are birth control options available nowadays?

Injections for birth control are increasingly accessible as well. IUDs, also known as intrauterine devices, are little T-shaped objects inserted into the uterus. There are two different IUD kinds. Small amounts of copper are released by copper IUDs into the uterus, stopping sperm from reaching the ovary.
