Vacations spent judiciously are investments with long-term benefits. Read on to know what you can do to make your summer or winter breaks quite fruitful. In the article below, you can find various options to pursue in the vacations and make them enjoyable and a learning experience simultaneously.

A vacation usually means lazy days, sitting back and relaxing, visiting ancestral homes, planning a trip etc. It’s a time when you are free to do what you want. Aishwarya Vats, an 11th standard student of Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School, Thane, echoed similar thoughts. “As a student, vacation would definitely be a time where I can relax and sit back and enter a period where I can function better as a human being. Often we become tired of our monotonous life. So during vacation time you have time to relax and set your cycle back,” she said.

However, Vats realized that creating an itinerary for the vacation would help utilize her spare time productively. “I had a vacation for three months and I realized setting a time table is going to be extremely productive,” she said. During her vacation, Vats attends Bharatanatyam workshop organized at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Mumbai. She is also planning to join Public Speaking and Personality Enhancement workshop conducted at the Xavier Institute of Communications (XIC), Mumbai, for her next vacation. Like Vats, there are plenty of things you can do to make good use of your leisure time

Make the best use of vacations

Manju Rana, Principal-cum-Director of Seth Anandram Jaipuria School, Ghaziabad, says vacations must be a balance of fun and learning experience. “It is important that vacations should be fun, but students must also gain something. Whichever activity or exercise you take up, try to finish it. There has to be a learning objective. Even the holiday homework, which has been assigned for students, must be more analytic and application-based. Take up an activity that is joyful and excites you,” she said.

Language courses

Children during their holidays can take up online English language courses to strengthen their language skill. Cambridge English is one of the well-known programmes to learn English online. T. K. Arunachalam, Regional Director – South Asia, Cambridge Assessment English, says that preparing for Cambridge English exam is indeed a productive and fun way for a student to spend the vacation. “Cambridge English provides school-level language learners with a range of high quality international assessments that make learning English enjoyable, develop practical skills and awards globally recognized certificates. Each of our qualifications focuses on a level of the Common European Framework of Reference, enabling you to develop speaking, writing, reading and listening skills,” he said.

Students qualifying the Cambridge English Language Assessment are awarded certificates that are recognized globally in leading companies, universities and institutions such as American Express India, SKODA India and the WHO India, etc. The British Council India also organizes Summer School yearly for students between 7 and 17 years of age. Children improve their English language skills through activities such as script writing, story telling, plot and character development and finally putting a show for their parents at the end of the course.

Follow your passion

Besides engaging yourself in honing your academic skills, vacations are also the best time when you can fine tune your talent and become good at it. For example, if you love football you can join Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools which offer coaching to boys and girls in the age group of 5-17 years through 23 training centers located in 10 cities across India. The institute offers regular courses round the year with monthly charges upto Rs. 3000, varying from center to center.

Seth Anandram Jaipuria School at its sports academy conducts training in basketball, volleyball, skating, cricket, taekwondo, karate etc. from 6 am to 8 am during vacations. Similarly, if you have a flair for singing, you can join schools such as the True School of Music in Mumbai, KM Music Conservatory in Chennai, The Delhi School of Music etc. that offer short-term/summer courses to nurture young talents in this field.

Learn something new

For each vacation you must aim to learn some new skills that will enhance your knowledge and will be lessons for a lifetime. You can learn a language, new style of dance, new programming language. If you are technologically inclined, you can brush up your computing skills like Microsoft Office, learn to make smart PowerPoint presentations with the help of your parents, elder sibling or a senior. “Students who are keen to take up Computer Science or Information Technology for further studies can learn programming languages. These are like vocational courses that will come handy to you when you join the IT-led world,” Rana added.

Books are your companions for lifetime and best way to spend your vacation is to take up reading. Students can take advantage of the library in their locality, pick up second-hand books or visit book fairs like World Book Fairs in New Delhi, International Kolkata Book Fair and other similar fairs.

There is a long list of things you can do on your vacation like join dance and music classes, theatre, learn musical instrument, blogging, sketching and painting, pottery, photography, cooking, visiting art museum and gallery, gardening, and the list goes on. Explore your options, pursue opportunities and figure out what will develop your personality and add value to your future. The ultimate reward would be a bunch of memories that you can cherish all through your life.
